is there a 5 spd tranny that will bolt directly in to the place of the 4spd

yes, isuzu 5spds used in the pup and whatnot will bolt right on in, if you use the search button there are Many threads covering this topic, and go in to greater detail in the information.

There are a couple of issues, like I haven't found a 5 spd solution to the 75 and older trucks. The 4x4 5 Spd is longer by a fair bit and requires some fab work on the trans mount and driveshaft shortening. The 2WD 5spds also can have a different spline count on the trans yoke, so you might need to swap parts there too.

Overall it is not a major project to swap, and it has been covered in much more detail. Search for 5spd trans and you should find a bunch more info.

A friend of mine bought a 79 4x4 that had a factory 5 speed. He swore it was on the paper work that came with the truck and was listed as an option.

79 didnt have deisel as an option did it?!? in all the factory manuals i have read, a 5 spd is never mentioned as a facotry option on a gas motor
