the saying goes "there are 2 types of riders. those who have went down. and those who will."

i am type 1.

i lowsided running about 50mph today.
me and 2 other guys decided to go for a little ride after lunch today at guard drill. we rode just a ways out a nice curvy road near the armory, stopped for a bit and turned around to head back.

i was trailing and trying to catch up. stupid noob mistake #1.

came up on a kinda sharp left handed curve. i decided that i was going just a bit too fast for the curve. downshifted at too high of RPM.
mega huge dumdass noob mistake #2

rear tire skidded to the right and i went down on the left. bike slid about 20 yards thru the curve and a intersection. luckily no other cars was there. there was a guy in a durango coming the other way seen me go down and stopped to help. by the time he got out of his truck i was already trying to pick my bike up. i slid on my back and landed pretty close to the bike.

all i can say is THANK GOD FOR LEATHERS!!!!! i was wearing my JR blaster jacket, cheap leather gloves (saved my hands tho shredded the palm of the left one) desert boots, and BDUs. my left knee is pretty fucked up. i got about a 2" spot of rash on top of my knee and its bruised pretty bad. still able to walk on it, just a bit stiff now.

now the bike, mechanical: my dumbass didnt have frame sliders. radiator is trashed, clutch lever broken, shifter knob broken off (found it. gonna make a keychain outta it) handle bars bent. swing arm was saved by my homemade spools.

cosmetic stuff: tank dented from the bars but not leaking, headlight cowl is trashed, barend rashed, tail is rashed. driver and pass foot pegs rashed. front turn signal destroyed (had aftermarket short stalks)

pics will come when i can look at it w/o feeling sick

My brother had a Ninja while he was at Camp Pendelton and went around a corner and hit some oil. The bike went down into the other lane, with a oncoming bronco. My brother rolled away from the bike and the bronco hit the ninja. My brother got a little road rash on his back and his bike afterwards was in a box.

I have a much more embarrassing story...

I had a 250 rebel.. I went out riding one afternoon... for hours I was gone... up and down the highways... probably 200 miles I put on that little bike that evening.

When I got home that evening, I made the right hand turn into my dirt driveway, downshifted and fluttered the throttle, at that point the throttle cable stuck open, and my brain locked up. The bike sped up and I slammed into my car. I ended up breaking my freakin pinky at the base. I didn't go to the doctor for like 2 or 3 days afterwards.. by then, there wasn't much he could do. He splinted it up and let it heal crooked as a sumbitch.

That was a few years ago, and damn.. it still hurts.

BTW.. the bike is gone... screw it.

I hate it for you, larp... Hope it all works out for you.. I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Well I am sure you are geting tired of hearing it but I will say it again.

Atleast you are ok (maybe a few brewses) you can alway's fix or even buy a new bike you can't buy a new life.

good to hear you were wearing leather.
I was hoping it wasn't going to be another "I should have had my riding gear on" threads, but pants would have definitely helped your knee.

I don't know your experience, but I guess I will throw these bits at ya.
Brake with the front brake.....it has the most stopping power.
let the clutch out on every downshift. don't skip gears, cause you see what happens.

Looks like they were good ones, they really did their job.

Now before you ride again, buy all new gear. that jacket and gloves and helmet did their job. Just like baby car seats, you are supposed to replace all of it so it's fresh and ready incase of a next time. know what I mean? 8)

OH FOR SHAME!!!!!!

I will most likely get another SV when I move closer to the mountains next year.
I raced one in 2003, and had one before that in 2002.
just feel lucky that you didn't ride a full fairing bike....$$$$$$

1989... 19 y/o honda Xl 600R. 55mph into the broadside of a Caprice that ran a stop sign and then stopped in the middle of the intersection in front of me. Flew 35-40 feet head first like superman and landed face down. no helmet, wearing shorts, T shirt and flip flops.... and rayban wayfairers. managed to limp away with no broken bones.

1995.... riding my 1992 KX250, went for some doubles, came up short and faced it. broke 2 ribs and and sprained ankle. lay there pinned under my bike for 30 min since i was out riding on a weekday by myself and there was nobody else out there. some other riders helped me load up and ended up driving myself to the hospital with broke ribs and no power steering (driving the LUV).

Ive gone down at last 3 more times on either an XT 600 or my ZX7 H1 doing stupid stuff like purposely getting sideways around corners in the rain. most of it was strawberries and some hamburgers...

Two years ago in Sept I high sided my Hayabusa. I bought a ZRX12 to ride while my Busa was being repaired and laied it down into a Ford Ranger that ran a red light. I only owned the ZRX for 5 days and 300 miles before it was totaled. Still have the Busa. Thank god for Alpine Stars leathers and boots, and Arai brain buckets.
