Hello. Well, this is the scoop. I have a buddy who has a 1980 Toyota pickup diesel. It's a neat truck, although it is onlly 2 wheel drive. He tells me there is another Toyota diesel sitting around near where he lives.

Also near where I am, there is a LUV 4x4 for sale with a dead motor.

Putting those two thoughts together, what are the chances of getting a Toyota diesel to bolt up to a LUV 4x4? I'm kind of wondering how extensive the modifications would have to be. Has anyone done this? It would certainly make a neat truck, if a bit underpowered...

CDG, first off it's great to hear you wanna go with a diesel engine into the LUV. What I think is the Isuzu diesel engine is probably more common to buy used than a Toyota diesel engine. The Isuzu isn't a lot more popular, but just a little bit. Plus I can tell you the Isuzu diesel will bolt right in on the frame of the LUV given it's a later model (78, 79, or 80). I wouldn't know if the Toyota diesel will bolt right in and I'd think it would take some modifying to do so. The Toyota diesel engine you're thinking about using is the 1L diesel which is an OHC 4 cylinder that uses a belt for the timing. This engine was used in 81-83 Toyota pickups. The Isuzu diesel engine is the C223 which is an OHV 4 cylinder that also uses a belt for the timing. I've always found the Isuzu is just down right reliable and will run all day. The Toyota diesel engine I've heard is a good engine too and the only flaw is the timing belt may break to cause further damage. The tensioner and idler is also recommended to be changed with the belt. For more info on Toyota diesels take a visit to http://www.toyotadiesel.com and I'm a member there also. Welll, I always thoughts Diesels are cool. I also always thought LUVs were cool. Put the two together and the result is awesme.

So you're in PA eh? Hos do you have a LUV there? I used to live in Berwyn, roughly between Philly and Valley Forge Park. Moved to AZ last year. There are more opertunities to find straight and clean old vehicles (and especially trucks). One of my other friends here drives a '69 chevy pickup every day, except the winter time when it's "too cold" with the lousy heater that most of those old chevy trucks came equipped with.

I was only curious about the Toyota because I would suspect that I can get my hands on the aforementioned truck fairly cheap.

I did know that the Toyota had a timing belt. Kind of like the VW TDI motor...

But your recommendation is the Isuzu motor eh? I'll have to look more into it. I don't really know many LUVs. Hell I've only seen like 3 in my life.

Yup, I'm located in PA. I live in Glenville which is located about 50 miles south of Harrisburg, the capital. My truck used to be my dad's truck until he gave it to me for my first vehicle at 16 years old. I've driven it as a daily driver ever since 2001 and I've loved every mile of it. It's a great truck and reliability is always there. Right now I'm going to put another cab on the truck because of accident damage that happened last June 2005. I haven't driven it since then, but boy let me tell you I do miss it a lot. I can understand you wanting to go with the Toyota diesel engine because it's local and the right price is always a great addition. I'm just referring the Isuzu diesel because I know it will bolt right into the frame for ya and still be an "Isuzu related product" in an Isuzu truck. And that's always good.

Yes, and you see I'm not only into diesels, but anything that drives. I'm also into fast things. So what you do is this:

rob the Toyota of it's Diesel to give new life to the LUV as a trail mule. Then you go out and get together a 572 crate motor- I hear they just started offering a pump gas model that still puts out over 500 horsepower. You find Mucnie rock crusher out of an old 454 'vette in a junkyard, and rob a 9" Ford rear from an old Maverick, and put together possibly one of the sickest sleepers you could ever build. Go over that truck in some spray paint. Cut and weld the stock wheels to get some 8 or 9 inch back tires on it...

OK, so it's a bit far fetched, and I"m not made of money, but it's a fun idea to entertain anyway no?
