Your post is kinda general.

Car battery?

Watch batter?

Assuming car battery, and assuming you mean that you switch the wires, things like lights would work. Anything with a motor would turn the wrong way. Most likely anything electronic would be very unhappy and may get permanently damanged.

Some solenoids and relays won't work in reverse, and there are diodes in the alternator that would not allow things to work right. There were some rigs back in the day that ran positive ground so it can work, but only if its set up right for it.

I've heard that if you can discharge a battery enough, you can hook it up backwards to a charger and charge it back up reversed. Never tried it myself though.

okay, so heres the deal--- The lil blue truck I bought had the alt. wires unhooked, and when I tried to hook em up, it sparked like a bitch. So I didn't really get into it til I knew someone from my wifes work wanted it and so I figured it was time to take a look and see what was up. So I started tracing wires thinking the wire from the alt. was grounded out somewhere. Well when I got to the battery, I was tracing the wires and the positive side of the batt. was bolted to the side of the block, and the neg. was going to the starter. I was like WTF!!!!! I called Denis and told him what was up, and he was like WTF too!!!! Anyway, unhooked the battery and turned it around. Tried hookin back up the alt. wires, and then there was no spark!!! Fired up the truck, and nothing started burning!! Pulled off the battery cables and everything is charging!! So, I am thinking the guy I bought it from, some how put it in backwards. I don't know fellas, it just boggles my mind that it ran, and didnt smoke the whole wiring system. So I guess it is possible to run it backwards with out doing to much damage. I don't know, I wouldnt wanna make it a habit to try doing it!!!!

I doubt the engine ran backwards.

The starter should have turned the motor backwards, but once it fired, it probably started turning the right directions.

If the engine was turning backwards, not only would the car go the wrong direction, but the oil pump would simply pump air from the top of the motor into the oil sump. Plus the valve timing and ignition timing would be all wrong. It just wouldn't work. There's no way it could run. It would be exhausting through the carb and intaking through the exhaust manifold.

I didn't mean that the engine ran backwards  I just ment that it was possible to hook up a battery backwards and still have the truck run! Granted the alt. would obviously has to be unhooked!
