I think you said your hood latch cable broke... It sounded like you had cotton in your mouth though.

If it just broke off of the handle under the dash, grab onto the cable with a pair of vice grips and pull.

If it broke further under the hood, you may have to take some stuff apart to get it off... I dunno. Where did it break?

I used a pair of Vise Grips too, just get it tight enuff and keep it locked onto the cable and that will be your mechanism to open it.
As for repairing the cable, did the swedged 'nut' end come loose from the cable itsself?

Geez... A custom made cable from a local motorcycle shop is less that 30 bucks!

If it broke off at the latch end...

You have to remove the front grill, then the hood hinges, then prop up the hood and use a bunch of extensions with a socket, a wrench, and a flashlight to take off the 4 bolts for the latch.

True story.

The best way to check for gas in the line is to suck on it a bit to listen for gurgling sound. But, how can it be running w/o gas in the bowl? Maybe your mech. fuel pump is bad? Or you have a vac. leak?

Maybe a stuck choke, clogged idle circuits or float needle, massive air leak. If it's gettng fuel to the carb, it's got to be something like this.

this is actualy a problem i've had.

there's a solonoid on the pass side of the carb, it looks like a 1 1/2 inch long nut with a wire running off it, the wired side of it points to the firewall disconect it, jumper it to the pos side of the battery(you should hear a clicking noise when you hook it up) see if it runs then.

if that solves the problem, the wires to your speed sensor are frayed or broken. you'll have to wire it(the solenoid) to the coil hot wire BEFORE the ballast resistor.

the part is actually called the idle stop sollinoid(anti dieseling solonoid), it cuts fuel press to the primary idle jet when you shut off the engine so your engine doesn't run on.

LUVNIT sounds like the most plausible solution. I'm thinking something happened to the brake booster line. Going from the wheelwell up to the latch, the brake booster line is close enough to catch hell. If it's leaking it's a big vacuum leak.
