Ok I have a 1975.... get this... So far for the past week I have replaced the Battery.. the starter... and it worked GREAT! But after I went to go get the tags for the plates. Nothing turns over. Theres no clicking theres no lights...

I checked the battery...it has a charge.

Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? I'm pretty ready to beat the crap out of this little truck!!

Did you replace the Battery with a new one???? If its used it can still show 12V and be stuffed. But that doesnt sound like you problem.

Check all your connections, check the terminals on the battery. Check the + lead to the starter motor at the starter and the fuseable link that should connect the dash/lights/ignition to the battery on the + post. If the fuseable link has melted its a good idea to look into why it did before putting another one on.

Check the earth terminal and where it hooks to the body and then onto the engine. Undo the bolts clean the terminal and the metal thats under it and then do the bolts back up tight.

Bad earths will usually cause 90% of wiring troubles in an old vehicle.

Cheers. Bob.

sounds like the battery post dont have a good connection. if its a new battery it should at least have your lights on even if it was going out. especially if the battery is showing a charge.

I checked all the battery connections, and it was a brand new battery, not used. I'm thinking that it is probably the fuseable link, because I had to rebuild part of the wiring harness on Sunday; that was the first fix I did, then the battery, then the starter. All the posts and connections are cleaned and connected properly, but I'm kinda worried about that wiring. I'm hoping that I dont' have to rebuild all of that again, but if I do, at least it's the weekend now :)
Any more suggestions are greatly appreciated. I need to fix a lot of stuff on this, including the interior.

on the + side of your battery, you will have a large wire that goes to the starter. also a smaller wire that has a plug on it that plugs into two wires. that will probably be rectangular plug. then that plugs yet again. check the first connection. it took me two weeks to find mine. when i took it apart i found that the male end was just about gone. 800xl helped find it.

The whole truck except for the starter is powered off the smaller wire(s) that connect to the + side of the battery. If you have a problem there, it won't do much of anything. Among other places, that wire runs over to the alternator. The big wire on the alt has a direct line to the battery, so check for voltage there to see if it is connected up.

I'm just going to put this one out there one more time, because it has bit me so many times. If you haven't since it quit, take off the connectors to the battery, clean them up, and put them back on. Until I replaced the + connector on my 79, it used to do this about once a week. Looks like it is connected and lights/everything worked, but the starter would draw enough power that the sketchy connection at the terminal would heat up and disconnect itself.

Alright, RE-replaced the wiring, rechecked all the terminals, then had to replace the alternator. :? It's running, but it's missing somewhere so will probably have to do the whole spark plug thing too; lol. Oh, well. What can I expect from a truck that has been sitting in a field for two years? But so far it's only a little frustrating, and more fun when friends help out, like with the alternator.
Thank you all for your advice, any and all is greatly appreciated. This little Luv has a lot of work left on it.

I didnt mention the alternator because you didnt mention no fuel. I woald assume that was also a problem.

Did you have electric fuel pumps over there????
The alternator has to be charging to make the electric fuel pump work and to energize the idle solenoid up to idle point.
I think the fuel pump also runs when the starter is cranking.

The fuel pump starts up when you start to turn the car over; you can hear it making noise when you turn the key to the "on" position. I didn't think it was the alternator either, because the pump was still working when it wasn't totally dead, but driving it one day drained the brand new battery and nothing would work after that. (barely made it home :? ) But it seems to be working ok for now, although I've not had much confidence to drive it farther then the parts store. Going for the oil change and tune up this week, as it's idleing too fast and the timing seems off. Might need to do the whole spark plug replacement this week too, but such is life. :)

OK, so I need to learn to NOT be overly excited about thinking that my truck is fixed. I started it up to drive to work today, and going down the road it's hesitating like it's not getting gas all the time. This is the most frustrating thing in the world! (well, not really, but still) I'm thinking that it's either the fuel pump, even though it's working, might not be working right, or the timing is WAY off, or hopefully something really simple like the air flow or idle...any ideas?
PLEASE HELP! :? I can't think of anything else...

I will definately try that! TY! I'm also thinking that the choke might be off a bit or the butterfly in the carb is sticking...hmmm. Lots to do and only owned the thing for a week; lol

check the fuel filter too! My '79 was sputtering and stuttering intermittently and had about 1/2 the power it should have and I replaced the plugs, wires, and dist cap before I checked the fuel filter which was totally clogged and that solved the problem. Good luck!

Alright, I checked all that other stuff, plugs, wires, dis cap, and fuel filter. Turns out the butterfly is sticking. Does this mean a rebuild? Or what? I really am an idiot when it comes to motors...

If you go for a rebuild of the carb, get a kit off ebay or from the parts store. Also, replace the vacuum lines. The vac lines are a common problem and quite irritating. In fact it may be that you have a vac leak somewhere... get a can of carb cleaner and spray around the carb base and vac lines while the motor is running. if the motor speeds up that is where you have a leak.

My advice, get rid of the Hitachi carb if you can and get a weber. That is unless you have to have an inspection. even then you can hook them up pretty closely to match the stocker, including using the air cleaner assy.

Good luck, and welcome...

Butterfly is sticking, as it wont return back to idle properly and revs at 14 or 1500 rpm????

Fit an extra or slightly heavier return spring to the carby.

Or you can do what i do, just a quick stab/blip on the throttle and it should return back to the propper idle. My ute only ever does it when your driving gentle, if your hard on and off the throttle you dont get any drama.

My ute does it and the dualcab with the 2.3L ive got here does it as well.

If its only the idle return id just give a slightly heavier return spring a go. A nice cheap easy fix.

Bob.

The butterfly sticking thing as in it stays open and wont shut like it's supposed to...and the thing just sputters and dies. Would the heavier spring fix that? Or could it still be the choke or something that I'm not thinking of? I'm going to be checking the vacuum hoses and such this weekend or tonight, depending on how much light is left when I finally get off work; the idea was genius to say the least :) I'm also changing spark plugs and wires this weekend, but if that doesn't fix the hesitation, I'm pretty much out of luck. I tried it yesterday and only got 4 houses down the street before it died. Turned the idle WAY up and got it started enough to put it back in the driveway; lol.
