I pulled an electronic ignition out of a Toyota 20R engine.

Has anyone put them into a LUV? I am thinking about doing it, but before I tear my distributor apart I want to make sure I am not loosing my mind, since both of them are 1.8L engines.

Oh, and does anyone have a source for the conversion of points to electronic?

When I looked up the car, the only engine option was a 1.8L

Mallory Unilite distributors for the Toyota and LUV are two completly different part numbers, which suggests that the distributor from the Toyota won't drop into the LUV. Check shaft lengths and drive ends closely.

The distributor shaft on the Toyota is shorter, but I got the spindle off the shaft. It would seem the sproket fits on the LUV distributor.

I am going to search for another distributor and find out if it will work. I see they are different part numbers, but for some reason, when I looked at the distributor for my 81 they looked identical.

Now, if someone had a distributor and ignition pack from a LUV they were willing to part with for the conversion on my 76, I may just abandon this project.

Hmmm. I should tell RockAuto that their database is wrong.

With a bit of a fiddle the electronic pickups etc out of a FWD I-mark (i think its the 4XE1 1.5L SOHC motor) Distributor will go into the G-series distributor housing.

You will need to rework a bit of the wiring and i suggest getting the coil off the I-mark with the distributor.

You could also possibly use the internals out of a 2.3L Pickup/Trouper dizzy.

Its possible some of the late G200Z (85 or 86 if you still had that engine option then) Troupers had HEI ignition.
The G200Z Impulse had an electronic distributor but it was a Crank Angle Sensor type and was photoelectric and it wont work without and ECU to read it.

Heres a thread on the FWD I-mark (RB Gemini) internals into a G161Z distributor conversion. A G180Z distirbutor should be the same. The thread has a few links in it to other thread you might have to read thru some crap to get the info you want but its all in there.

Cheers. Bob.

just to add to rodeobob's info, the 81-82 gas LUV had electronic ignition and I believe the P'UP and Troopers with the G180/200 had electronic ignition also after 84.
