Does it do it at any particular time/situations? Whenever I've had fuel pump problems they would show up only when I'm accelerating from a stop usually at about the shift from 3rd-4th, or when I try to top it out on the freeway/highway. If the truck would normal do 85 pedal mashed to the floor, it would start sputtering at 60, stuff like that. The pump was still working, but not well enough to keep up with the motor's demands for fuel.

your condenser might be bad.
happened on my blazer. it has dual point dist.
put new points and condenser on it and condenser went out shortly after.
it was backfiring and spitting and sputtering.
now it has the old condenser back on it.

check the condenser and your fuel filter and for any plugs in the fuel line. If all else fails check float level on the carb, my ford used to do strange things and it was the float level being off.

i know it may sound dumb, and im not doubting your mechanical abilities, but MAKE SURE you have the points adjusted right! also, check the lobes on your distributor. if they are excessively worn then you are doing nothing by putting new points in...

good luck, keep us all posted!
