Had any rain in your area lately? Sounds a lot like water in the gas. I just fought with the same thing, and finally found a split on the small breather hose from the tank to the filler neck. For me it was very intermittant, I wasn't getting much water in the fuel, but everytime it sucked some up it would cough and sputter. It might also have come from the last place you got gas. It this started not long after a fillup that is where I'd be thinking it came from.

If not that, then it could be points. They can act very much the same. Seems like mine always tended to go really sudden too. It would run fine one minute and the next it was ready to cough and die. This is usually not intermittant, once it starts it won't stop.

You could try the quick fix of some gas dryer additive for the water possibility. You can also use Isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) but stick to the highest percentage grade you can find, since the remainder is water. I can get 99% stuff around here at Fred Meyer stores, I think it runs about $1.50 a bottle.

Beyond that, there are a lot of possibilities. Carb could have some crud stuck in a jet, vac leak, head gasket blown, the list goes on and on. If there are any other symptoms like smoke out the tailpipe, or something like that let us know. Doesn't sound too serious to me, but if there are other clues it might be.

Thanks for the tip when i got in it this afternoon it was running fine. and it has rained the past couple of days but i did not drive it in the rain because my wipers don't go that fast. I have heard that if you do through and mud hole just right it will get water in your distibuter cap too.

Your gas tank might need a good cleaning. My old Tempo use to run just fine until i took a corner, or braked hard, and mixed up the stuff in the gas tank...then i'd run at like 10 mph. After dropping and cleaning the tank, it ran like a champ.

Thanks I also have a 80 model 4x4 that has brake problems. I have put new front brakes, calipers, master cylinder, back brakes. They work when truck is not running but when you start it they will not work the pedal goes spungy. Anybody seen that.

The pedal should be softer by a little when the motor is running if the vacuum brake booster is doing its job right. Sounds to me kind of like there is just air in the lines and it is more obvious when the booster is helping. Bleed them a bunch more and see what happens. When you replace everything like that a lot of air gets into the system and it may take a lot of bleeding to get it all out. Also check for leaks around where the hoses hook into the calipers and that the bleeders are on the top side of the calipers. They can go back on upside down.

If it goes to the floor with the motor running and is rock solid at normal height when its shut off then I don't know what it could be. Would almost have to be a bad master cylinder and/or booster.

the sputtering could be caused by a clogged fuel filter too. that's what happened on mine.

Does your pedal leak down? Did you replace the rear brake cylinders? Check your fittings, and if your rear cylinders are really dirty, they're probably leaking down and it feels like air in the lines, this happend to my LUV after replacing the rear axle with a used one that was sitting for some time. We replaced the master cyl. and bleed every wheel untill we checked the rear cyl.s, bout 17 bucks.

On the sputtering - make sure that your fuse box is working as it is designed to work. Mine needs to be replaced, since it causes the fuel pump to go nutz.

I had the same problem with the brakes on my 80 4x4. Changed the brake booster, rebuilt the master cylinder, rebuilt the rear brake cylinders and yet the brakes were still mushy when I started the engine. Here's what I found out, yes you can bleed the lines over and over again, but, if you went as far as you have, consider blowing the brake lines out. You won't believe the gunk that will come out of the lines. Worked for me, brakes work fine now.

Alright another problem. I was driving my 79 Luv and i pulled into the house and turned the truck off. Couple hours later i got back in it and tried to start it it wouldn't start. I check the gas, carb and it was gettin gas,and check the plugs and it is gettin fire. Somebody give me some ideas on what else it could be.

you can go to your local auto parts store and get a manual and it should tell you whats wrong. Also if it has points the points may be stuck
