Well, the alternator was putting only slightly more than 10 volts, so I've replaced the alternator. Under lifetime warranty, no charge. Then I replaced the battery, total prorated cost was $18.99. Then I got an actual Japanese voltage regulator for $17.05. (I'm not going to include the $85 I blew on a fuel pump that I now realize I didn't need--but then an education is not free.)
The result? It no longer dies on the road. The cutting out on the road began the day after I drove 160 miles with a washer and dryer in the back, taking close to 5 hours for the trip. It rained most of the way. So I had on my lights, wipers, occasionally the heater for defrost. And of course the radio.
So I'm presuming that this electrical load on the undercharging system is what caused the immediate problem to become apparent. Anyhow, it doesn't cut out under speed now.

But it still cuts out at traffic lights and stop signs. I'm going to go over the carburetor next. And maybe redo the recent tune-up. Weather and work have kept me from it so far but maybe this Friday and Saturday.
And if that's not it, then who knows? Maybe the fuel pump relay after all, maybe a solenoid.
But at least I'm driving again.

Lessons: If it's cutting out, check your battery. If that's low, check your alternator. If you change your alternator, it's recommended that you also change your voltage regulator.
Thanks, big-time, for the help, guys. When I get it completely fixed, I'll post what it was. Cordially, cl.
