Hey! please dont yell at me as i already used the search key allthe way back 10 pages. well on my 80 luv i have no spark from the coil. i have read the post about this problum before and the last guy with this problum fixed it by replaceing his points. well i have the same problum as he did. i have tested the wires going in and out of the coil and i have power going in and out all the way up to the coil. the coil is brand new never been used. aldo the points and condencer is brand new as well as the plugs and plug wires, so that cant ba my problum. i heard that the coil is supposed to be grounded??? there is only one wire going into the coil and one going out of the coil. what is the correct way to hook up a coil? i am used to the hei so i know nothing about this. i hooked all of the wires up like they were before i replaced the motor. the motor is a known runner but the truck was not a known runner. the guy who had the truck before me repaced the motor but said he could not get it running so it could be in the wiring somwhere. cant i jsut run a wire from the fuse box to the pos side of the coil to insure power? i am sooo stuck. i have run down EVERYTHING that has been posted before. everything is new!!! and still no spark. i have already drained the gas tank from all the carnish it held and refilled it with 4 gallons of fresh gas. i know this is a simple fix and i am guessing it is just one wire that is not hooked up. i do have an extra black wire coming from the driverside of the firewall that is not hooked up anywher??? i can take a picture of the way i have it hooked up and post it so you can get an idea of how things are ran? please help... i dont want to take it to a shop so i can pay $70 for them to hook up one wire that will take all of 20 seconds!!!

power going to the coil but no spark? points are new and gapped rite, wires and plugs are new, coil is new, connections are new... what is wrong? im about to shoot the truck!!! the motor turns over fine, just wont spark...

My luv has done this twice. First time it was a broken wire from ignition switch to ballast resister on coil. Got it home by running a wire from + post on battery to ballast resister. Second time it was ballasr resister its self. Had to get one to get home. With key on check hot side of resister for 12v. then check coil side for voltage. Check wiring. make sure coil side of resister goes to coil and other side of coil goes to distributor. + on coil is ballast side. Coil grounds through case. If it is mounted correctly it is grounded.
Let us know what you find.

the resister sits ontop of the coil rite? it has the red short wire coming out and hooked up to the pos side of the coil. the other wire coming out is a black w/ yellow stripe and it goes into the harness somewhere, so i can run a fused wire from the fuse panal to the pos side of the coil? that should bypass the resister? i thought it also had to with the voltage regulator? but thats how its supposed to be rite? one wire going into the coil one wire coming out and the black with red stripe goes to the distributor... is there any wires that i missed? im not really understanding the point of a resister and why its there. i have a msd 6 ignition box that i tryed to hook up and i still got no spark??? would it be worth it to just pay someone to fix this? i have no clue.

The resistor drops the voltage the coil sees with the engine running. The other wire gives it full 12v when you are cranking to help it start up better.

If just the resistor is bad it will usually pop over while you are cranking and then die once you let off the key. In that case you can run a wire straight from the coil to the battery and it should run, but the coil will overheat fairly quick. Might get you home but I would not run it that way for long. Since you are not getting any spark, if you try that and it runs the more likely culprit is the bypass relay that tells it to bypass the resistor when starting. It is under that mysterious metal cover on the passenger fender with the fuel pump relay. If you have a donor that runs, you could try swapping the relays (I forget which is which) and see if that gets it. Could be your fuel pump is also not running though, since those relays are tied together.

Failing all that, the alternator or voltage reg could be bad, they are tied into those relays and trigger them. Whatever you didn't swap with the motor, swap over to the truck you are trying to fix and see what you get.

Well today I went down to work on the truck a little more. I tryed "jumping" the coil with a wire from the batt, like you said 800xl and BAM... started over first try. the resister in the MYSTERY BOX (lol) makes some harsh noise when i apply the power to the coil. I do have my parts luv sitting rite infront of me so im gonna go ahaid and replace bolth the relays insureing i get the rite one. I will post tommorow and let you all know if the is the culpret! thanks everyone! 800xl, you and catmando know the luv's top to bottom!

Tryed to replace the resisters today and i still got nothing. I checked for gas and that checks out ok but still no spark. th evoltage regulator is on the driver side fender rite? sorry to ask but someone stole my hayns manual... also is there any way to check the resister with a voltmeter to check and see if it works? and should schucks carry somthing like this, or is this a part that i have to get from a dealer? thanks again!!!

You swapped the resistor on the coil or the relays under that cover? I'd go for the relays under that metal cover, the resistor on the coil, the voltage regulator, and then the alternator. If that doesn't get it, its in the wiring somewhere.

The voltage regulator is on the driver's side fender, square metal box a little bigger than your fist.

The resistor on top of the coil should measure 1.3 to 1.7 ohms or right around there. Measure with it disconnected from the wiring. If it is way off from that or not connecting across at all try the one from your donor. A lot of parts stores should carry one that will work though. If they don't have one listed for the LUV, just have them find one that is in the right ohm range.

I ended up swapping the resister and the relay's and the voltage regulator and still nothing. on the doner truck it has the plug and one wire running under the cab, its pretty thick too. on the good truck this same wire was attached to the voltage regulator itself with a condencer. i am going to check and see wher the doner wire goes and then run it the same in the good truck and see what i get. the one thing i have not done though is replace the altronator, i will bring one with me today and see what i get!

just checked the donor truck and the wire going to the voltage regulator is coming from the fuel pump. i will try to find that wire and hook it up. I'll keep you posted.

okok, I ran the wire from the voltage regulator the the fule pump and it would start but only while i was turning it over. i checked my air cleaner and it was cloged up with some hay or somthing so i removed it and whent to try to start it and now the fuel pump went out!!! :x :x  I anm going to grab my fuel pump off of the other truck and see what i come up with.
