Im not really familar with the standard type coils and distributors. Now that I have ditched my HEI for clearance reasons I am stuck with the old type. I have a stock points type distributor with a MSD cap and coil. What does the negative terminal on the coil go to. I would normally asume it would go to ground. After reading the instructions that came with the coil I was a little confused because it says to points or amplifier trigger. The distrubutor has one black wire coming off of it with a ring terminal on it which also I assume goes to the ground. So Im a little lost in this department and could use a little help. Also my Hei had a place clearly marked for a tachometer. The new setup does not, so how do I go about getting my tach hooked up again?

The car will run whichever way you hook the wires to the coil, but in general, the "hot" wire from the ignition switch goes to the NEG post of the coil. The pigtail wire from the distributor goes to the POS post of the coil. This is a post from another web site, but I am pretty sure its right!!!!
also, the tachgoes to the NEG. side, I stress NEG. cuz if you put it on backwards, you now have a paper weight! 8O

Hey guy your coil wiring should be Hot to Pos. dist. to neg. and tach. to neg. The coil will work ether way but this is the correct way, Just remember that the tach. always gos to the dist. side of the coil. 8O

They are right when they say the coil will work either way, but I'm told the positive side will burn your points out pretty quickly.
