My gauge goes right all the way to hot as soon as my ignition is turned on. Does that mean mine works?

I found a picture online of what it looks like out of the intake. The end on the left of this picture that looks like the head of a nail is the part that sticks out the bottom of the intake. It is directly under the thermstat housing where the top rad hose goes into the intake. Your picture does look like the right connector, it should slide on over the tip of the sender from the side.

Here is the pic:

This is one of the hardest things to find at first so don't feel too bad. You really have to dig in and look for it though, even with the best instructions this is one you'll have to work for.

Where did you find that photo. I need one, I bought one but it was too big.

Chavy, you really need to get a manual and read up on this temp deal. The manual will walk you through it. If you can not figure it out, you might be over your head and need to visit a mechanic.

I don't know why I am doing this.

Now Chavy, what I am about to tell you I just did. I walked out to my garage and did a simple test and walked back into my house in under 3 minutes.
Here is a simple test:::::
Between your battery and ignition coil there is a white plug connecter with 4 wires. At the engine side of the wiring harness you will see a wire that is yellow with a black stripe on it. The connector should fit over the nail head. Now run a wire from the negative side of the battery to the yellow with a black stripe wire. Go into the cab of your truck and turn the ignition to on. The stock temp gauge should go to the H side. Now walk out to the jumper wire and remove it and the gauge should go down to the C side of the gauge. If it does, then all of the componets work for the stock gauge and you need to install the new temp sending unit in the manifold and hook up the wire and you are done.

We don't mind helping out here but you need to know the basics and have a manual.

My bad, I assumed that "C" was not the end of the needle travel without looking first.

Ok. We have now given you two or three different ways to diagnose your problem / question. You need to try one of them, and let us know what you find out.

Luvrv8 really spelled it out for you. If I was you I would print up his post and go out to my truck and do what it says, before I posted anything else. :wink:

Mine sets just about flat across when up to temp. Somewhere near the middle of the white area. Could be you have no thermostat or it is stuck open.

Just noticed your earlier post, pic is from http://www.rockauto.com, do a search for "rockauto code" for a discount thing I posted not long back, I think it should still be good.

mine used to sit right in between that break in the white lines about an inch past the C before I had all sorts of overheating problems (see http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?t=9783 ) Does anyone know the approximate temperatures that the needle points to on a stock gauge? I am guessing that break in the lines I described is about 180/185 degrees (thermostat is rated there). what is it at when it reaches the end of the white lines (the gap before the H)? How about the H itself?

My guess would be that they are all very different from each other. especially now that they are 20-30 years old.
