On my 78 the wipers don't return to the bottom when I turn them off. Is this correct on these trucks? They just stop wherever I pushed in the switch. :?

Looking for some confirmation or disagreement on this question.

Is the wiper return mechanism in the switch or the motor?

I think the switch has a wire to tell the motor when it is off and return the wipers to the bottom. Not certain though. On all the luvs I've had you could trap the wipers up by carefully hitting just the right spot on the switch between low and high, so the switch has to be involed somewhere along in there. My guess, it could be either motor or switch so start with the cheaper and easier to swap of the two.

It's in the motor, it's got contact traces on the main gear of the motor, one of them is connected straight to the battery at the apex of the turn so it goes all the way down. I'm geussing it's worn down at the end of that trace, try soldering a bridge on it, sand it down a bit, then put some new lube in it, the grease is probably caked in it, that's how mine was on my 4x4 LUV

Hey Rondog, let us know what happens. If it is the motor, can you post a pic of what you do to fix it? My luv does the same thing with its wipers.

That doesn't explain how the switch can stop the wipers mid swipe, going up or down. They also shut down mid stroke if you turn off the key, so the motor can't be directly tied to the battery. I don't doubt you, I'm sure there is something just like that in the motor, but it just seems like the switch has to be in the loop somewhere.

Come to think of it Finalman, you're an 81+ driver right? A lot of things could be different on this sort of stuff.

Woops, typo. Meant to say I don't doubt you.

I did forget about that.... it's probably through the switch then. Gotta find my manuals...

BTW 800, isn't the frame the same on 81+ trucks as the 80- trucks?

Yes the frame is the same but ALOT if not everything is diferant as far as body work and electrical. The 81+ LUVs have more in common whith a trooper in that respect than the early LUVs...

I think there may be some differences in the frame, some of the front suspension is a little different, controls arms and such.

From what we've all put together, it sounds like wiper return problems could be switch, wiring, or the motor. They all appear to be involved in whatever process makes the return work.

There's gotta be a hold in circuit in the motor thru a limit switch that opens on down side and kills power when the dash switch is pushed in. That make sense?

I'll try to explain the operation. When the wiper switch is on, power is supplied and grounded at the motor. When you push in the switch to off the ground is transfered from the motor to the switch through that internal contact inside the motor that opens once every revolution. Then the wiper motor continues to run just until that contact opens.-------hope this helps.
You are right, the problem could be in the motor, switch, or wiring.

Post From The Past

It was the switch. I got one from a junk yard.

Just some additional info on the windshield wiper circuit for those who might not have a manual. I would have suspected the contact points, per step 4. But egg's explanation of the switch makes perfect sense when you look at the circuit.

This is from a series 10 manual -
