I found a picture online of what it looks like out of the intake. The end on the left of this picture that looks like the head of a nail is the part that sticks out the bottom of the intake. It is directly under the thermstat housing where the top rad hose goes into the intake. Your picture does look like the right connector, it should slide on over the tip of the sender from the side.

Here is the pic:

This is one of the hardest things to find at first so don't feel too bad. You really have to dig in and look for it though, even with the best instructions this is one you'll have to work for.

Good job chavvy, you totally missed the post above mine, no it doesn't have a flat male, it has a post like the one above, someone's put a different sender in or your looking at the wrong thing.

My last post in here has a picture of the sensor, if you can't see it, there must be something wrong with your computer. The connector is (for the last time) shaped like the head of a nail.

If for some unknown reason yours has a flat male blade connector on it, I don't know what to tell you. It is certainly possible someone replaced the sensor with something else before you owned it, unlikely, but anything is possible.

this thread needs comic relief,

what ever you do don't hook up the oil press to the temp sender and vice versa, your temp gauge will point to hot and the oil press light will come on faint and then get brighter as the truck warms up.

don't ask me how i know this......i don't want to admit it........

by the way, here's what yer lookin for

Chavey, it's quite possible your sending unit has been replaced with a plug.
If so, it would not have the nail looking thing, just a hex bolt looking thing.

Plug the wire into the "nail" on the sensor and hold the outside of the sensor against some unpainted metal on the truck while someone watches the gage. It should move slowly up to the "C".

9v batt might get it to register on the gauge, but i'd look in the repair manual first to see if either a + or - charge is what the sending unit gives off, find out which one and also at how many volts. You figure that out then you can hook the wire up to the batt and you should be able to get a reading.

You can try this. You will need to buy a sender, I think it's less than $20.
Get it hot in a pan of water on the stove,(only let the one end get in the water, keep the nail end dry). Once it's hot, take it out to the truck hook up the wire, and as Ben said, hold it against some unpainted metal on the eng. for a good ground, turn the ignition to on and see if the gauge goes up.
