Can someone give me a basic run down of out to pull the LUV motor/trans? i've never done anything like it before. I don't really mean a detailed step-by-step guide, just something I can go off of. like:

1) remove hood
2) remove driveshaft
3) etc.

Also, when lifting out the engine/transmission, where do I put the lifting chains on the engine? pictures on that would help, if possible. :-)

Thanks
-Brandon

Alright Brandon--besides what you said, ya wanna lift the front of the truck
Image

1- Disconnect all your wiring, and make sure to label every single wire that you take off!!!!!!
2-Drain your radiator, disconnect all your hoses, heater, radiator, etc.
3-remove radiator.
4-unbolt your exhaust from manifold.
5-Get about a 2 or 3 foot chain and bolt one side to one of the bolts to the exhaust manifold, towards the rear, and bolt one side on the opposite side some where towards the front on the intake manifold.
6-place your engine hoist where it needs to go, and put a little lift pressure on the chain, then unbolt your motor mounts and trani mount, dont forget to unhook your shifter!
7-Now with everything unhooked, unbolted. The motor should be free to lift out.
8-MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEONE ELSE WITH YOU, WHEN YOU GO TO PULL THIS MOTOR!
Image
9-Gradually lift the motor up, and as it comes up you are gonna wanna ease it forward until your trani gets past its mount and drops, which will give you the angle you need to pull it the rest of the way out. Set it aside and do what ever it is your doing.
Image GOOD LUCK, take your time and don't get hurt. I probably left some stuff out, so if anybody else has something, I am sure they will help too.

You mite want to pull the tranny mount off. that is what i had to do to get the tranny to clear the crossmember. i just pulled the motor in my luv the other day. also i have a 4x4 so it mite be different on a 2x4. Be sure not to crush or break the dipstick tube when your pulling the motor, it was easyer for me to pull the driver side motor mount to clear the dipstick. make sure you pull your fan off as it will be in your way. make sure to use good wrenches on the driveline, 12MM. i had a big problem with mine, they all stripped out and i had to grind them off... stupid cheapo tools!!! another good thing to do is to disconnect the harness for the tranny at the firewall before removing it. also there is a ground strap on the tranny dont forget about that!~ hope this helped. oh ya i pulled my motor all by myself so... you can too. having a second person is only for safety, like if the motor fell on your head you would want your buddy there to get you an aspirin. well i hope this helped. oh ya get a bucket becaulse when you are pulling the motor with the motor and tranny at the extream angle it will be leaking tranny fluid all over your floor/working area.

Even if you drain all the fluids from the tranny drain hole it will still have quite a lot in there to leak out the tailshaft. If you happen to have a spare driveline yoke you can put that in there to seal up the rear of the trans and it shouldn't leak much then.

When you start to pull it, have something below the trans to catch it as it comes off the cross member. A block of wood works well. If the truck is up a ways and the trans comes down on a hard surface it could hit hard enough to break the tailshaft housing. Depends on how well balanced your chains are though. Once you are clear of the rear trans mount and/or crossmember and sitting on the block, you can get under there and ease it down off the block instead of having it smash into the concrete. I always end up stuck working on dirt so I haven't had to worry about this too much.

For hook points, you could just use the manifolds themselves. There is also a bolt hole on the side of the block behind the exhaust side that you can stick a big fat bolt into and lift from. It is on the side, but very close to the rear. I can't remember the size/thread pitch but it is a big sucker so you know it would hold. I think one of the motor mount bolts fits, but a chain might eat the threads. Personally, I've grown fond of using a strap on the rear, wrap it around the bell housing a then hook both ends up to the lift. No worries about the hook point, and no scratches on anything.

I'm sure everyone has their own ideas on this subject. More than one way to skin a cat, just be safe and go slow. Think things through and you'll find your way through it.

Do I still need to label all the wires, and worry about the dipstick tube and stuff if i'm planning on dropping in a v8?

Thanks for the guide with pics! Possible sticky?

The wires still might be handy to know when installing a V8. You can use some of them to run some of your stuff like guages, alt, choke, etc. There are not too many so it wouldn't take much extra time.

Just wanted to update and say I got my motor/transmission out. Most helpful tool was definately the homemade 10 lbs Ford wrench (sledge hammer). Now I just need to strip everything else out of the engine bay, and interior of the truck. I'm now contemplating taking the body of the truck off because it would be easier to install engine/transmission/transfer case that way.

you will find it easier if you label the wiring before you pull it off. installing a v8, or not...
good luck with the swap.
