Well I too, have never messed with a manual tranny, but a buddy of mine replaced the clutch in a Datsun I had long ago, and I remember him using a plastic gear lookin thing to align the tranny back to the motor, so I am thinking that you need this pilot bearing thing to get stuff back together. Unfortunenly, that is all I can help with. I am sure you will get your answers here soon. Good luck!!!!

The pilot bearing is in the end of the crankshaft and the tranny input shaft rides in it. When redoing a clutch you need to line up the disc with the pilot bearing so that the input shaft can slide into both. If they are lined up, the trans won't slide forward enough to bolt it up.

What you need is an alignment tool. You can either buy/rent/borrow an generic one, or if you buy a full clutch kit it should come with a plastic one that will fit. It has a tip that just fits in the pilot bearing, and a wider part that just fits through the clutch disc, and centers to the two to each other while you bolt the pressure plate on.

No flexplate on a manual trans, the flywheel sits right where an auto trans flex plate would be.

If you have it apart and can spare a few bucks(~$100), do yourself a favor and get a full kit. If the flywheel has no grooves you can reuse it, but it would be best to get it resurfaced at a machine shop. If nothing else, get a new friction disc. (~$30)

Be aware that if you swap a different motor into an 80 4x4, the flywheel and all the clutch parts may be different. The 80 4x4 uses a bit larger disc than the 2wd 80, and all older LUV motors. Be sure to swap all the parts to your donor motor.

Oh yeah, if you take off the flywheel, use blue locktite on the bolts when you put it back on. Otherwise oil will weep past the threads. Might as well replace that rear main seal too... ;)

i am useing the stock tranny from my 80 4x4. i can just take the clutch and flywheel off the blown motor and put it on a 76 running motor bolt them on and just put the tranny back on??? i am not reusing the parts from the 76, everything is from my 80. the cluch disk is a little rusty and from the way you made it sound is like i need a new one? the flywheel is a little surface rusty too but there is no grooves of scuffs of marks on it. and that is the word i was looking for "clutch alignment tool" thats it!!! i have never done this before but as soon as i got the tranny and motor apart i new what i was doing. i think it would be best to go and get a new clutch. does a new flywheel come with a clutch kit? i still plan to rebuild by stock motor from the 80 soon. brother b. got a good price 4 me on a kit! thanks. and thanks 800 XL! i still cannot get the ignition switch going though... where and what color is the fuseable link 4 the starter and the ignition? i cant find it and the previeous owners mite have cut it out, as there is some real bad wiring in my truck. later guy's.

The wire to the fusible link should come out of the harness that runs along the top of the inner fender on the passenger side. It should come out within about a foot of the battery or so. Might come out as one wire or two, then it should connect to the + side of the battery. If your battery only has the fat starter cable hooked to the + side, then you need to find that wire and hook it up. If you were to unwrap the harness in that area, it should be the biggest wire in it and should be solid black.

The flywheel on a 76 is different from an 80 4x4. The 1980 4x4 is the only 76-80 style with a larger clutch disc. So the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate are all different to match this. If the flywheel just has some rust on it but is not grooved you could clean it up with some sandpaper and run with it. Just be sure not to use any kind of petroleum based stuff on it to wash it off. Brake cleaner will do it. Just about anything else can cause clutch slipage.

YES!!!! mine goes from the batt as two, a thick black and a thick red. then goes the foot or so that you mentiond and then pluges into the connection on the fender just like you say... so it sounds like i got that figered out, but now it can really only be the ignition switch rite???

So you are saying a 80 flywheel/clutch/tranny will not bolt up and run on a 76 or 77 motor?
