well i finally really broke the pup yesterday. i went to the cruise in boise yesterday, which is like a 50 mile round trip, plus about 10 miles of cruisin. now ever since i lowered the rear of the pup, ive had a drivline vibration, but it wasnt very noticable, so i didnt think much of it. so i drive to boise and go cruisin for like 3 hours. towards the end of the night i notice that the vibration has gotten alot worse, so me and my friend decide to head back to caldwell. so i get on the hiway back to town, and my u joint lets go. it tottaly fubar'd, so i was like fuck it, ill make it back. by now the vibration is so bad that the whole truck is rattling apart. i get like a mile from town and i stop at a gas station to let the thing cool off, cuz its stinks of burning gear lube. so im starting to wonder how bad it is. so after like 10 minutes i start off to take my friend home, and i put it in gear, and the shifter is all sloppy, and the u joint is clunkin really good now. i get out of the gas station and start goin up the overpass, and the u joint say its had enough and toally breaks. so now im stuck on an over pass with a busted driveline. so my friend calls his dad, he gets there, we tow it the rest of the way off the overpass to another gas station, i pull the driveline, and you know what i find? the hole that the bearing for the u joint are bent out on the shaft and the yoke, plus the bushing, seal, and part of the tailshaft of the tranny are on the yoke. so my tranny is fucked and my drivline is fucked.

but... since i work at a junk yard, i can pick up a five speed for 150bux. im also gonna put a new clucth in it and get the proper driveline work done. im also gonna try and find a 2.6 flywheel, so i can have the bigger clutch. the good thing is i still have my grandpas truck to drive for like a week are two, so itll be okay.

The 2.6 flywheel will not bolt to the motor. The 2.3 and 2.6 motors have two more bolts that hold the flywheel on compared to 1.8 and 1.9 motors. Look for an 80 4x4 or 81 and up 1.8 or 1.9 for the biggest clutch option you can put on a g series motor. With a pup, you probably already have it.

oh. well i looked at the tranny today, and i found that the outputshaft doesnt have any play it it, so im just gonna put a new rear tranny case piece on it and i think itll be okay. ill still have to get a new driveline, but that wont be that bad.

well i would have jumped on that, but anthony hooked me up with his old 4 speed and driveline from his 77. so im gonna go get a new clutch and some other stuff and get the pup back together.

on another note, i found a g200 at my work with fuel injection. i was thinkin about snaggin that for the pup. i think fuel injection would be cool!

Injected G200 eh. Sounds like an impulse is without an engine...
I would realy like to inject my G180, and seeing as how its esentially a G200 now i think that set up would work well. That said i demand you find me one too! :P

mkay. first off im gonna show ya how bad the damage was.

you can see here how much of the tranny was broken off when it was being beat to hell by the yoke.

Image

heres what the yoke looks like

Image

heres the driveline

Image

WHERED MY TRANNY GO?!?!

Image

ok, now to get back on a serious note, i noticed that my new tranny was a hydraulic clutch version, and the pup has a cable clutch. so that poses a problem. the new tranny does have a spot to pivto my cable clutch arm though. ill just have to make the clucth cable run to the other side of he motor. i hope itll be long enough and wont bind.

Image

thats all for now. im gonna go get a new clutch and pressure plate tomorrow, so ill get back to ya on my progress.

Looking in the photo it looks like you could swap bellhousings to solve the clutch issue.

WELL... after 5 hours of workin on itm i got the old clutch off the new clutch in, the new tranny up, mounted, tightend up and now its back on the road!! the new tranny has a little bit different ratios, but its back on the road and thats all i care about.

i also figured out the clutch cable problem too. the cable was long enough to go to the other side of the motor, and i used the clutch fork from the old tranny and the clutch works great!

im really glad that i got this thing fixxed. i was gettin tired of drivin that gas hog v8.

OH!! i aso fixxed the drivline vibration problem too!! ive got the driveline from a 77 luv in the pup now and it was the perfect length! the problem before was the driveline was too far in the tranny and was binding, but now the driveline is like and inch shorter and it works perfect now!

im glad too. man drivin that GMC was not fun at all.

anyways, i got some miles on the pup today. the only thing that i dont like about the whole swap is that the gear ratios in the new tranny are setup for a 456 rearend, and the pup has 410s. so all my shift points are different now, and its even more of a dog off the line now. but hey, what am i gonna do? the tranny was free and it got me goin again, so i am not gonna complain!

once again id like to thank you anthony. ill get ya hooked up with a smallblock somehow.
