In Australia we need three pieces of vital information to get a vehicle registered. They are the VIN number, the CHASSIS number and the ENGINE number.

Ill give you all the info that I am 100% sure of. It is a 3 seater, diesel, 4cylinder and was manufactured in the 9th month of the year 1980. Hopefully that info will help you to help me work out where my number will be located.

On my luv truck I am unsure where exactly to find these numbers. Pease note that in Australia the Chevy Luv was released as the Isuzu KB.

In my engine bay on the passenger side (which will be your drivers side because we are on the opposite side to you guys) I have 2 plates. The top plate is silver and has general motors stamped in it. Under the general motors is a number that has also been stamped into the plate. It is 14 digits long.

Under that plate is another one that is prob 3 times as big and is engraved instead of stamped. It has a heap of writting on it. The first one reads the following. KBD25 CAB CHASSIS
The second reads an 8 digit number. (NOTE, there are no letters in this 8 digit number, it is purely numbers.

Sorry if i sound like a complete jack ass but i must have these numbers exactly correct. They need to be 100% A-OK other wise i get in trouble. All our other cars are really easy and say VIN:##### or CHASSIS:### or ENGINE: #####. This is a bit complicated because it is an older car.

Any help would be gratly appreciated and if someone would be able to post up a pic with arrows pointing to the info on the manufactures plate then that would be super.

Cheers,
Aussie phil.

I think on the amrican Luvs the VIN is on a plate in the left door jam.

I'll look at my trucks in the morning and post what I find.

I looked and all I have is in the door jamb is a metal plate pop riveted in and says vehicle identification number.

I don't know where to find eng. # or chassis # other than somewhere on the eng. block and some where on the frame.

I think most of the info from the US trucks is going to be pretty sketchy for you to go on. There were different requirements here than there, making it next to impossible to guarantee anything being the same.

You should pull off the cowl panel (behind hood, in front of windshield, wiper shafts go through it) and look on the left side (driver's side in the US) for a number. That is the end part of the US VIN number, so that should compare to one of your numbers on that engine bay tag and give you which one is the VIN. Other than that, I don't know. Look on the block right where it meets the head, there is a number in there somewhere that is probably your engine number, but I don't know for sure.

We have a couple of members from down your way. Noyz has a luv, and I think we have had a couple cross over from http://www.hotgemini.com too. You might check there as those Gems share the Isuzu heritage of the LUV and KBs.

That sounds like the last part of a typical US VIN code. The A would be the year code (which matches 1980) and the rest is the serial number. The C takes the place of the CRN14 or CLN14 you'd find on a US model that tells you if it shipped as a 4x4, 2wd, or cab with bare chassis.

Beyond that, I think you need some local help. Call up your vehicle registration agency and ask them, never hurts to ask questions and they might be able to tell you where to look or what to look for.

Cool. Im on my way to having all the correct info. You guys have been a big help so far.

I found out today that The Vin and Chassis numbers are the same thing just a different name. All this time I thought i was looking for 3 numbers but now it is just 2 numbers.

Ive got half of a Vin/chassis number and now just need to locate the engine number.

A mate at work told me to try my local library. He says that they will have the owners manual for it.

looking in the service manual, there is a stamped number on the carb side of the block, where the head meets the block. it should be visible between the distributor and front of the intake. i believe it's also 8 digits.

Good news. I have found the engine number. It was at the front of the engine. Just sitting behind the thermostat for the radiator. It was all rusted over. The number is 602***. It was on the carb side. Only 6 digits long though.

I looked at my 180sx and see that it has a vin and a chassis and a engine number. Now im starting t wonder if i am looking for the 3 different numbers again.

Ive found the chassis number. Well the guy doing the roadworthy found it.

It is on the left hand side of the car in the engine bay. on the top of the chassis rail. 7 digits long and it part of the number that is under the cowl panel.

Cheers for all your help guys.

Thanks for updating us too. We may not get a lot of people here from your part of the world, but the next one that asks that question we'll have an answer for.
