just how exactly do you loosen the slider to get new pads in? it slides good i just can't get caliper and pads over the disc. FYI... 79 4x4 and 80 two wheel calipers interchange. they have diff. part# but the disc pads are the same part #. Thanks for the help.

I usually use a C-clamp to press the piston back into the caliper. Put the screw pad of the clamp in the center of the piston and the hook part of the clamp around the back side of the caliper.

Make sure to monitor the level of your brake fluid reservoir, since the fluid will be going from the piston back into the reservoir.

Oh, and don't crank down on it too tight. It shouldn't take much.

Actually I am confused. If you have the calipers off and the pistons pushed back, you just stick the calipers back on the brackets. Clean and grease up the slider plates that go in between the caliper and the bracket before you put it back together, and that is about all there is to it. There are no real tricks to it.

Like I said, I'm confused and trying to figure out what might make it hard. Did you take the caliper out of the bracket, or unbolt the bracket from the spindle and take them both together. That is the only way I can think of to complicate it. The easy way to do it is to pull the caliper out of the bracket, leaving it (the bracket) bolted to the truck. You pull the little snap pins out of the slider plates, pull both of them out(top/bottom), and you can just tip the caliper out of the bracket. If you had it all stuck together it would be harder to put back on over the rotor.

With the bracket on the truck, you drop the pads into the bracket, tip the caliper back into place over them and the rotor, and stick the sliders back in to hold the caliper. It should be fairly easy.

I hope somewhere in this mess of a post you can find what is holding you up. ;)

yes. check my first post. the slider pin and clip part is what i am talking about. i dont want to just start pulling pins and clips just because they are there. i dont mean to make it complicated. i dont want to screw it up either. thanks

Well that is what has me confused. If you pull the clips from the sliders, remove them, the caliper just comes out of the bracket. Installation is just the reverse, put the pads in the bracket, put the caliper back in the bracket over the pads, slip the slider plates back in, put the clips back in them. As Ben said, you have to push the piston back in so it will fit over the new pads, but otherwise there isn't anything to get in the way.

OK, here is what I think has us confusing each other. What I did was take the two bolts out of the back side of what I am calling the caliper. Now it is just hanging by the hose. Push piston back in, put pads in and only have less than 1/2 inch from pad to pad, wont go back over rotor. What I get from your last post is that I need to put what I have off, back on, and just take the slider off of what I think you are calling the bracket.(the part with the piston in it) Also, how much of the piston be sticking out of the body? Ireally don't mean to make this so confusing. My three year old son helping me doesn't make it that much easier either. But he is having fun helping. Thanks for being patient.

Yep, I understand now. You unbolted what I call the bracket, instead of taking the caliper out of it. Look for some silver things in between that bracket and the part with the piston in it. There will be a little clip front and back that you need to pull out. Then you slide those little silver bits out from between the caliper and the bracket that bolts to the spindle. You need to take out both of these silver slider deals(top and bottom), then the caliper will come out of the bracket. Bolt the bracket back to the truck, put the pads into it, then you put the caliper back in and slip the sliders back into it. FYI, the pads go in with the metal spring tab facing down.

When you do it this way you can see plainly how much you need to push the piston into the body to clear the pads. You also want to clean up those metal slider deals that go between the caliper and the bracket. I use a little silicone grease (Sil-Glyde is the brand I've got) that is for brake parts to help keep them from sticking. You don't want it to bind up in there or the brake will drag.

If it worked by just unbolting the whole works it would actually be simpler, but I think with new pads in there it is hard to get the whole thing over the rotor and bolted back up.

I'll see if I have some parts around I can take pictures of if you need.

Now I think we are on the same page. I've never had to deal with these sliders before. Thanks for your help.
