Post subject: SB starter skipping out
PostPosted: Sat Feb 15, 2003 3:33 pm
I went out to turn over the rig today and she started fine. I still have a starter problem that i was wondering if anyone knows what the fix is.

It a mini starter. All parts are new, flex plate, etc... when i start it, it will turn over a time or maybe two and skip off and wind out the starter. It will do this over and over. It doesnt matter if its warm or not. ive had this problem for a few years, but due to the fact that its timed well, and i know how to minipulate it to start right up, I havent tried too hard to fix it.

there arent any missing teeth on the flex plate.

any takers. thanx

ill probably try that, but my question would be this;

If its popping out, why would shimming it out more help. dont get me wrong, thats probably the answer, im just trying to understand the technical part of shimming. so i understand what im doing when i do it.

did you, 79 luv, shimm something out and was it acting like mine.

When it does work, does it sound normal? As in, like most other cars?

the answer is because the sylinoid is pushing the starter gear past your flywheel so shimming it limits the length that the statrer gears can go

yeah it sounds great. it will turn over a couple times, a quarter time, or whatever, then just winds out.

thanx for the explination, that makes sense.

your pinion on the starter is probly over shooting the flexplate thus shiming it out will help.

You might be able to see where the ring gear has been riding on the starter pinion gear if/when you take it out. That will give you an idea of how much shim you need. Basically once the starter gear disengages from the ring gear (on either side) it will retract and spin out. Just be glad you don't have the reverse problem. A buddy of mine had the starter sticking on, even after you shut off the key it would keep trying to crank the motor over. :)

Well, had the starter out and back in. shimmed it up, shimmed it down. no difference. so I had my 10 year old push the start button ( huh, huh, thatscool) and low and behold, the gear pops out and engages the flywheel, turns it and then it quits turning it even though it is still engaged, the spin out is inside the starter. Its not the starter sprocket thing-a-mabob skipping off the flywheel.

Its a brand new mini starter. its maybe three years old, but has seen less than a few hundred miles. I might have trashed it once when my timing was WAY out, and i cranked it over and over. the dang motor was chunkin and grunting. wanting to fire against the starter.

anyway, anyone know if you can rebuild these or should i just put in a $35 rebuilt stocker.

My starter on my elcamino used to do the same thing. I had a cheap oriely starter on it. i tried shimming it and that didnt work. I got to looking and when i tried to start it the starter was moving at the end opposite of the bellhousing. i went out and bought a starter brace and put on a a GM starter. it seemed to fix it. You should try the same thing. Oh yeah when you shim a starter you are meshing the gear teeth ,( starter, flywheel teeth) closer or further together, the starter gear wont go past the fly wheel nor does shimming have anything to do with that i hope this helps

Ive got the problem licked. I was using a mini starter. Did all the shimming. Nothin. So the kid turned it over and i watched it engage, and the starter would stay engaged, but the little gear would not turn.

A lot of mini starters are 'gear reduction', so the smaller starter turns faster and is reduced in the "drive" attatchement through some gears and bearings, and little one way clutch assemblies. WELL, a few years ago when my timing was WAY OUT, the thing was poppin and gruntin, tearin the crap out of my starter and flywheel. I now beleive the "drive" was damaged during this 'learning experience'.

One word of advice to anyone wanting to throw $150 or more into your motor, DONT BUY A FANCY MINISTARTER. they are weak and unworthy of a permanant spot in my engine compartment. THe bullet proof, STOCK, rebuilt, $39.99 has a well earned seat next to my block.
