I'm looking for options to upgrade the stock rear axle. I saw the post about the 8" ford/maverick, and the 8.8' explorer. But aren't these to wide? The 8"s I've found have under 3 to 1 ratios, so i'm lookig at a gear change. I found a 1998 Rodeo with 6 lugs and 4.10/4.30/4.77 gears, don't know for sure. What is this and how much power will they hold. Don't really want mismatched lug pattern. Any help you guys can give would be great. Thanks hotrod

No comments at all? I'll be running a 275/60/15 bfg drag radial at first.

It all depends on how much power you want to put behind it. A stock s10 rear will fit just fine, you just have to get a driveshaft fabbed. That rear has 3.73:1 gears, so it's a little more highway friendly. It won't hold up to much horsepower though. It has C-Clips, and will come apart if you have much power.

I don't know much about the 8's or the 8.8's. I do know you can always take it to a shop and get it narrowed. You might as well go with a 9 inch.

Check out these posts... Maybe they'll be some help.

Especially look at that bottom one. Hope that helps you out.

if you go with the s-10 rear make sure of the gearing... they came in a lot of ratios ... i have a 3:42 in my s-10 and a 2:73 as a spare

Im standing by the 8". No c-clips and you can get lockers, spools, gears and after market axles for them. If you need convincing, go to http://www.maverick.too and check out the time slip forum. You can get the same parts for the 8.8 but theyre c-clip axles. You have to move the spring pads and have the driveshaft reworked but you would with other ones too. And if you want an 8" I have a spare to sell.

yea luv junky, I did a search but was not as sucessful as drummerforhire, who looks like he's been through this.

Hey, big happy, a can get my hands on two mustang II 8" one has a 4.30 and the other a 3.50. They are 4 lug axles. I think the 8"(not the 8.8) Has the third pinion support like the 9".

Thanks for the input and the links. I will finish off these drag radials and then mount a slick in it's place, so a 9" maybe the wat to go. Just thought you guys might know of an "easy" alterative to the problem.

If I was to run any rear end in a performance vehicle I would instal c clip eliminators. My neighbor used them on his mustang and I am sure you could get them for the S-10 . We ran a Maverick rear end in a S-10 and it looked a little to wide but they hold up pretty good. If I was going to narrow one It would be a 9"

Well it looks like thats the way i'm goin. I have a 79' bronco axle with 3.50 limited slip diff. I called a buddy, that i helped out with some a/c work awhile back, and ask him. He said " bring me that thing and tell me how wide you want it and i'll make it happen on the house". FREEBIE! I'll have moser respline the axles, redrill the bolt pattern, and hopefully they will do my front rotors. Pics coming pretty soon.
