Well, I had said before on this topic that I put a 1967-327 in a 81 nissan 4x4, and I had to take it to the smog master and have him okay it. So, your motor has to be current with the year it is, to the smog equiptment it came stock with, so with my motor, all I had to have was a stock breather, with the little aluminum hose thingy to the exhaust maniflod, and a pvc. If I remember right. So basically depending on the year of your motor, you might need about the same. But long story even longer, you need to make an appointment with a smog master! Good luck!!!!

damn that thing is gonna have some motor in it now. now are you gonna use the mounts that we made, or are you gonna redo em? we made those mounts so that the motor would sit really low and far back. and yeah, your gonna need a tranny mount made. we got kinda side tracked by other things goin on with the truck and just left the stock tranny mount in there.

mkay. sounds cool. yeah the 7.5 isnt gonna cut it for that big inch motor your gonna be using. you could still sell that for a nice chunk of change though.

Here's what i know on the smog issues here in Cali. Your motor has to be the same year or newer than your chassis. It must have all smog equipment that came on that year engine and it must be operational. You'll have to take it to a referee station and they will look it over for the engine year, correct smog equipment and then if that's good, they will smog check it. If it passed that, they will attach a metal foil tag to your vehicle and you're golden.

there's some pretty good smog info on the "Jags that run" website. They seem to have a decent grasp on the smog rules

Bob is correct. You must run at least a 1980 engine with all smog equipment. Don't forget, you will have to smog every 2 years.

Hey RPO if you're serious you better talk to the refere in your area NOW before you do anything. They are normaly very helpful and will give you good solid info on what you will actualy need. But Bob and luvrv8 are correct, same year as vehicle, and you must run all the stuff for the 80 truck.

A good starting point if you want to know what you are getting into, look at the emissions equipment for an 80 chevy c10 half ton truck, this is the EXACT equipment the state will reqire. You better run a stock smog cam and heads to, the ref will verify the head castings, but the block is a wild card. I went through this years ago, and it's a pain, but can be done.

You will have fun mounting a CAT in there too, and dont even consider anything perfromance wise like dual cats or any cam change. I say this cause I put a cam in my 75 years ago and it was damn near impossible to get it to pass each time, a major headache, but it's still on the road today.

I saw some mention of a stroker motor, if you're going to try to modify your motor and be sneaky, you might as well just build a bone stock 305 smog motor for the tests, and then another motor to put in AFTER the test if you know what I mean, otherwise your going to make life miserable for yourself come test time, ask me how I know..

Good luck!

Sounds like you have a handle on it. and yes if for some reason the motor wont want to play with the CARB allowed emmissions, (mine was putting out like 2000 ppm with an allowance of 250 ppm) they will at least ask what year the heads are, the guy I dealt with looked them over as best he could without pulling anything, im pretty sure they go by the stampings on the front of the head so be prepared, but they wont yank a valve cover or anything. These guys are normaly pretty sharp, and you are at their mercy.

I have a 1989 Chevy Silverado 1500 that is a CA vehicle and has no smog pump. I kinda tripped out on that. some do and some don't In CA you just need a motor and its smog equipment that is newer than the body it is going into. 78 truck w/ 79 V8 and smog equip = OK

Yeah once u get the foil tag then just drive into any smog station and get it "tested" every 2 years. its fun to watch the tech's expression when i roll in with a nasty aluminum headed, gear driven, roller cammed small block shaking his windows and then he reads the tag that says 1964 327 with a check mark in the PCV box as the only smog equipment. BTW my truck got foil tagged back before the law changed and it was legal to transplant an OLDER motor in.
