I was remined last night as to why street racing is a bad idea. A 19 year old fella lost his life when he was thrown out of his mustang after he lost control and rolled it 6 times in front of the dealership I work at. He and someother fella in a camaro were drag racing. Remember this the next time some idiot wants to race you on the street. I know I will.

I hear ya big happy I work in an operating room and just last weekend they brought in a kid .... yeah he was a kid just 16. Well I was on call my pager went off I called thospital and they said they had a trauma coming in and I needed to be there ASAP!!! 8 minutes later I walk into the O.R. and saw the craziest thing i have ever saw so far in my 4 years of doing this! I walk in and try to picture this .... I look at the patient laying on the table the docs are going to town our Neurosurgeon who has been doing this for 35 years had never seen this either this kid was an unrestarined driver ( no seatbelts) He had a piece of the windshield in his head... lemme explain it a little more detailed, take an ordinary sheet of paper 8" long put it up to your forehead right at the bridge of your nose and just at the top of your eye sockets this is where the windshield entered his headnow imagine this piece of winshield being shoved into your head all the way back to where the opening of your ears are!!!! 8O 8O 8O This is how much windshield this kid had in his head. From what I understand he was alert and responsive in the E.R. but couldnt see. To make a long story short he was racing another kid, and had been drinking (.06) and lost control. did alot of major damage to his other organs too. He lost his life after a 4 hour battle in the operating room. If ya wanna race take it to a controlled enviroment and take your chances there. Well just my two pennies

yeah im not a big fan of street racing either. I have seen (noone i know thankfully) loose thier lives on the street. Alot of times here where all of it happens the people cant stop and end up running red lights and hitting other people broadside and then the or gets multipul DOAs. Its realy sad when another 15 mins from the main drag and they are at the raceway.

There were 4 deaths here in Denver last fall from street racing, all killed were innocent pedestrians who had nothing to do with the racing. The thought of anyone doing that just makes me cringe!!! I think anyone that is caught doing it should have thier vehicle confiscated and thier license suspended for at least 5 years. Sounds harsh but if you can't race at a track legally, you shouldn't endanger innocent lives. Dam I'm getting old!! 8O Of course too, growing up with my monster 4 cylinder LUV doesn't help either! :)

I have to admit, as some of you might, that I am a sucker for takin the green light- floorin' it, till about 35 mph which is right after i shift to 2nd. If there are any stories about death or harm coming from this common little thrill that I think we all try to enjoy responsibly- Id really like to hear it. Its that one thing you over look that will get you, or someone else hurt. none of us want that.

to roll your car 6 times you have to movin' along pretty good. that kinda racing is even dangerous at a track. I hope to hit the track this spring- but I have to admit, pretty freaked out about it. 4 kids to feed and love. wont do it till i put in a roll bar!

drive safe ya'll 8)

Having the street race backgroud that I do, I tend to think you can't pin all the blame on the street racing. I mean, let's face it, the guy was a dumbass for driving that fast around a crowd or around other cars. The fact that he was street racing just means there was two dumbasses.

I think making the equation street racing kills, is like saying guns kill. A gun needs someone holding it to kill, so is it the gun that's responsible or the person holding it?

I'm not condoning all street racing. I'm just saying, let's not make the blanket statement that street racing = death.

Street racing now-a-days seems NOTHING like it was back when I used to go. Now it's more like a free-for-all act like a jackass spree.

We used to make a serious effort to be safe. If anyone showed up drinking or drunk, they got asked to leave. If they showed up with missing lug nuts, or something unsafe, no one would race them.

Every accident I saw over the years (when I used to go all the time), could have easily been prevented. Most of the time, us regulars even knew ahead of time when something was going to happen. Things like racing next to the crowd, racing the wrong direction, racing while drinking, etc. Every time we'd call it ahead of time. It'd be like, "that asshole is going to pack someone". And sure enough, he would. And we'd run up to his car and he'd be drunk.

Then the news paper would blame it on street racing. The reality was, he was drunk and driving like an asshole.

That's my 2 cents. Feel free to disagree. :)

I think most of us are guilty of stoplight launching up to about a 1/16th of a mile when we get a clean shot(Heh, Heh). But this street racing craze is incredibly dangerous. Too many people involved without safety precautions. luckily around here, most of the cars on the street are all show and no go. This little town has a handful of "XXX" wantabees but they only look the part. There are some military guys that have hot cars but they seem to have a handle on their game. They know that parts aren't cheap.

i guess the difference is; who are you putting to risk. If its just yourself, then have a good time.(skydiving, NHRA,etc..) if others are in danger in any way, thats where responsibility comes in. We all do things for thrills. racing at a track is the most responsible way to do that.

Ive done things when younger that were just as dangerous as racing down some city or rural road at 120+. thankful my stupidity didnt cost me or anyone else. the problem is young kids dont think things through as much as 'responsible' people. These cars nowadays are getting faster, and light as a feather. I think thats why more of them get cracked up, and get a bad rap.

Bens point is well taken. Street racing has always been around. I used to watch them in San Fernando valley 15 years ago. Street racing will continue. its usually late (1:00am) so there arent anyone around.the problem is the more carefull ones will share the blame just for being there if the 'one idiot' screws things up. and like u said about guns, all the carefull people arent the focus- its all the screw ups. Nothin new!

Ok Ok, I know every street race isnt going to end in death, but I was more pissed than anything. My wife brings the kids out to see me sometimes at work and all I could think about is the what if. These jackoffs ran the red light in front of the dealership. An intersection that my wife crosses after her visit. What if she would have been there. You can understand my anger when I wrote this post. Just waiting for the local media to blow this thing out of perportion also. It already is kinda tough around here with a hopped up car.

Well I have to say that I agree With Ben It's not the racing that kills it's STUPIDITY..... It's like th stupid people who leave their gun laying around and their kid kills themself and they want to sue the gunmaker!!! I have done my fair share of street racing......... But I think all of us have at one time or another. Hell we used to go just ouside of town on the highway and have a guy mark off the quarter mile mark and we would wait until it was clear and we'd jump out into the lanes and friggin go for it! Blue Meanie probably knows exactly where I am talking about    Well anyway I was just throwing out my opinion too Now that I am a big boy I can race on the track with the big boys!!!!

you have to think about this too.
back in the day when they used to street race there wasn't near as many people as there is nowadays.
now you can't go down the street without passing a house.
street racing can be safe if you have a safe environment. now it seems like the only safe environment is the strip.
I am all too guilty of going out and racing. hell when I was 16 we used to street race every weekend!
people are going to do it and people are going to die from it. that is life.
I have seen cars hit each other (behind me) in a street race before, so I know crap can happen.
the only thing that induviduals can do is go to the strip. the strip here has open night on friday nights for people to come race for like $10 (entry fee) That is a killer idea. don't charge much so the racing people that usually will be there anyway can run their vehicles.
maybe those of you out there can get their local strip to do the same.

benifits are in anyones favor that go to the strip. im not going to list them, but there are no benifits to racing on the street....even though most people do it.

Bad thing around where i live is that the nearest track is about an hour away  . Most school kids can't afford to drive that far so they end up racing down the main street here. But at least most of em are doing it on the stretch where there's no intersections or buildings, just the lake.

here in colorado everybody has a damn rice burner. :x :x :x i work on a straight road (1/2 mile long) off the main road. all the ricers meet there on friday and saturday nights.i'm half and half on street racing. the one thing that bothers me is my girlfriend and my 11 month year old daughter comes out to my work to see me every once and a while.now where you turn into my work is close to a 1/4 mile in which i worry about her getting hit (most of these guys use nos and aren't afraid to use it). on the other hand i know i'd be out there blowing there doors off if i had a good engine.the one thing that pisses me off is the cops know they race back there and only usually only come back there once a month to bust ( there's close to 2000 cops in the springs 0X ).i know the cops can hear them racing.hell who can't, those high pitch mufflers.now i'm not trying to diss on the ricers( i actually have a 98 neon which has a couple extras) but call me old fashened but if your going to race have a real motor.not some damn 4 banger with nos. i bet half of the fools can't even point out a starter. the other thing that pisses me off about here is everybody has money.these parents will go out and buy their 16 year old kid and brand new car that has 10 grand under the hood 8O (no bullshit. i've seen it).now i'm only 19 but i've never have had anything handed to me. i've had to work for everything.thats why i love my luv so bad. i put my heart and soul into this truck and i'm very proud of myself :D. half of these damn kids haven't worked a day in there life. i've been living here for close to 3 years now and i can tell you i've only had 1 freind since i moved out here(my girlfriend) i'm trying my hardest right now to move back to cincinnat where thers actually real people at,not some spoiled bitches. maybe even i can meet the famous larphead :D i wanna see if he catches that :D

My sister lives in Colorado and she hates it.

In fact, they just got RAILROADED by the cops in that college town by you. I forget the name of it. They decided after that to leave ASAP.

Good topic. I think the general opinion here is that people are going to do it, and there are always going to be different levels of commitment to responsibility. some will only 'race' at the track (like me- my truck never sees over about 35 mph), and others assume the risk of racing around town.

too bad, but these things will always be around.

two years ago some wrecked pretty bad at the monroe track. he could have easily died from hitting the wall real hard.
