I am thinking of swapping in an automatic since my wife has back problems that make driving a manual difficult for her. I am concerned with a drop in what little power the stock motor has and with what mpg I can expect as I will be putting a lot of miles on it once I get it back on the road.

So for all you folks that have have driven both let me know what you think....

Not sure of the difference, but if you act quick I will help you get the trans out of the truck here in Santa Paula.

I haven't driven an auto. LUV, but I know what mean Bob. And I think you will have that very problem if you swap.

I have a 76 LUV with an automatic and it is just slow but sure. No snappy pickup there. I get about 21 to 23 mpg city with a stock rebuilt hitachi.
hope that helps :)

Bob Ive got a 76 with auto, not too bad. 20's for mileage and can get up to @80-85 mph. To tell you the truth though, Ive never driven a stock manual luv so I really can't compare....
