I have a 79 4x4 that i bought new sitting in my garage rusting to the ground. Beyond restoration but a few good parts.

I also have a 1980 2 wheel drive that is totally rust free that i am restoring. I was out in the garage tonight working on the 80 and I started looking at the shifter and the boot. The boot is trash. And the shifter in a 2 wheel drive looks like a piece of coat hanger wire sticking out of the floor.

Since the 4x4 is a Mikado it has the nice fat shifter. So i started wondering if the shifter in the 4x4 would work in the 2 wheel drive? I thought if this is a possible swap, that would be great since the boot in the 4x4 is in perfect condition!

Well, it turns out that the shifters are identicle where they go in the transmission and i made the swap in 20 minutes! I now have nice fat shifter in my 2 wheel drive with a like new boot to go with it!

I am sure this has been done before but i thought i would share this with people who may not know how easy this is.

Ike

From my understanding the transfer case is a bolt on, so to speak. So it would make since to have the main case and main shifters to be the same.
I bought a shifter boot from Kragen(aka Checkers) for $12, it had a metal plate on there that flex and then I screwed it down.
