Start by looking at places that sell gauges, I bet http://www.jegs.com and http://www.summit.com have something to look over. The stock gauge cluster is held in by three wing nuts on the back, two on the left side and on on the right. Then you just have to build a plate the same size/shape, and mount your aftermarket gauges into it. Of course the wiring is is an issue, but its not that complex just timing consuming to trace out. A lot of aftermarket gauges will need different sending units anyway, so you would by pass some of the wiring issues that way. Starting with what gauges you want to use will help you eliminate the parts of the process you don't have to worry about.

Thanks for the info on the gauges. Anyone out there know anything about building a custom dash? I think it would be the best way for me to go that way i get more of what i want rather then just stock, but i dont really have any idea how i would even start something like that...thanks

I did find a post from a while ago showing someone else's idea on how it was done. Basically though, you make a plate the same shape as the current gauge cluster, then cut holes in it the size of the gauges you want to use. You can also find a decent looking glove box door and just flip it over, same size and shape.

Here is the old post:

You will also want to check out Tilted's site for his truck:

I did a search for custom gauge with find ALL terms checked and it found a couple others, most of them old tho and the pictures are now dead. Maybe someone will repost them.

check my website out, I had made a new gauge cluster out of 14ga steel, and painted it black with autometer gauges.

I belive Dennis told me that the glove box door is the exact same fit as the dash gauge section, so find an extra glove box and you will have something to work with that doesn't already have holes in it.---Does any of this make sense?--
