Hi all. The front main on my 81 Luv is bad, and I'm going through a quart of oil every week (~150 miles). As long as I have to pull the motor, I may as well replace all the gaskets and seals. I'll check compression before I tear it apart, but it may snowball into a ring and head job, in which case I may as well do a complete overhaul (250k miles.). All because of a $2 main seal...

I'm just starting to do my research, but I have found a gasket set for a later C223 engine. Does anyone know if the internals, water jackets, etc. of the later diesels (say 1984-85) are similar enough to the earlier ones ('81) that the gasket set is interchangable?

Also, what sort of mileage do people see out of 4x4 diesels. I'm seeing 30MPG, but I read on an earlier post that people see 38-45. Maybe those are 2 wheel drives, or it may be another indication of wear in my engine.

Thanks.

Are you sure you don't just want to replace the seal and leave everything else alone? I've heard those diesels are built like tanks.

If I can replace the seal without removing the crank, (With a press-on seal like transmission splines use.) then yes. If the seal is like SB Chevys, where I have to pull the crank, then I might as well do everything at once.

Any information?

The 2.2 diesel are built like tanks...

I have done a head job on mine and the parts are very costly...

Here is something..when searching for parts you can also ask for parts to 82-87 isuzu pup diesels....they have the same motor and most parts store will list the same exact part cheaper under the isuzu pup as opposed to a luv...its kinda weird....

A head kit for my truck listed under a 81 luv...was almost 350 dollars.....
Looked for the same kit under a 82 isuzu pup and got the same kit and same part numbers for 150.00.....its weird

My luv currently gets about 42 mpg last time a checked.....

really, over 40 mpg with a 4wd? that's unheard of from my experience

I cant even crack 30 with my 82 4x4, even with 15" tires.
