I got my freeze plug problems worked out, and replaced the points which turned out to be my misfire problem. Shortly after my truck wouldn't idle for anything. After trying several things to fix it I concluded that I had a carb problem. Now since I already had a 79 longbed for over a year, I've rebuilt one of these Hitachi carbs before. That truck got 25 MPG in the city and ran like a top after rebuilding the carb. So I ventured yet again into the 2-barrel LUV carb. After disassembly, I found dirt and rust in the float bowl. I also found some ports about clogged up inside. After puttin it back together, my truck runs like a champ and I'm getting low 20's in the city! :D Has anybody else had a successful Hitachi rebuild on here?

i was thinkin about pullinthe carb off my pup to see if could clean it up, cuz its starting to run crappy, but i ended up with a weber the other day, so i aint gonna mess with it. but i bet its jus like the AISIN carb that i rebuilt for a toyota pickup. that was a breeze, except the brass jet that i broke when i was trying to put the replacment in it.

I've been told by several people that this is a tricky carb to attempt to rebuild. Many on this site will probably agree with me. Having said that, it should only take about 20 minutes or so to pull the carb. It takes several hours to rebuild and at least one night of the bigger parts soaking in a big can of carb cleaner. If you don't know much about carbs, I wouldn't recommend trying to tackle the job yourself there blove. Are you sure it is in fact a carb issue? I'm not doubting you, I just don't want you to go through all that if you don't need to. But if it is bad I could rebuild it for you for a small fee and test it on my truck before I send it back. What are you gonna do with your old stock carb, farmer? I wouldn't mind taking it off your hands if your not gonna do anything with it.

I used to make drawings of the linkages, so I could get them back on correctly. Now I just use a digital camera. If you feel overwhelmed just make a drawing or take a picture of the layout of things and their relationship to each other. It could save a lot of trial and error. To the amateur, I would say don't lose the little ball bearing check valve at the bottom of the accerator pump well. I learned the hard way 50 years ago when I turned the body of an old 54 Ford carb over in my hand and found a BB in my palm. It took me a while to figure where it came from.

i would think its the carb its as old as the truck (79). It back fires through the carb when i'm driving it regular. and it loses power when doing on a flat road. When i let of the gas it backfires out of the exhaust. So i would guess it is the carb it only has 66,000 miles on the truck, so that tells you it wwasn'tdriven very often. plus i know where it came from (grandpa), so i'm guessing it probably has some gunk it it and needs to be gone through. Holy that sounds good in all on the rebuild but i don't have an extra one to put on. Its my daily driver or else i would let you tackle it.
thanks and any other info would be great.

I'd help ya more if I could but I don't have a spare carb either and you tackling it yourself would still leave you without transportation for at least a couple of days. I might be able to help you in a few weeks. I'm hoping to get a carb or two and rebuild them so I have a spare and so I can sell a few rebuilt carbs. If you're interested just let me know.

I think we can work with that. Like I said, it will be a few weeks. I want to test every carb I rebuild on one of my trucks before I will let it go to anybody. I'll have it tuned and the choke and idle adjusted, but you may still need to fine tune things to your truck. Every engine is different and will need the carb tweaked a little differently. But if you're willing to wait a few weeks I think I can help you out.

Fuel injection? you swapping a whole new motor? You got the money for that? The only thing you'll be running is behind your truck pushing it.
Nah, Im just kidding.
