its for emmisions so if you dont have to smog your truck you can remove it. My truck hasnt had it hooked up for who knows how long so i finally took it clean off and plugged the hole in the manifold.

Technically, it is against emissions laws to remove or defeat any of the stock emissions equipment on a vehicle regardless of whether you have to test or not. So, I'm not recommending you do it, but the short answer is yeah, it will run without it.

The EGR pipe goes from the exhaust manifold to the underside of the intake around the back of the head. It can be a major pain to get out, usually the exhaust side is stuck pretty solid. Penetrating oil will often help, as will heating the exhaust manifold up. It also helps a whole lot if you can get a flare nut wrench for it, I forget the metric size, but I think 7/8ths fits pretty close. The intake side isn't usually as hard to get free, but you can unbolt the EGR valve that it is hooked into in order to get one or the other of the manifolds off. I usually just pull the head with both manifolds on and deal with the EGR tube after I get it loose. All you really need is one side loose and you can get the manifolds off and back on again.

If you have emissions testing you will need it to pass. EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It is used to reduce NO2 emissions by routing a bit of exhaust gases back through the intake to decrease temps inside the cylinders. Increased cyl temps leads to increased formation of NO2. Another effect is that a hotter cylinder will be more likely to have detonation/preignition (ping). Without EGR hooked up you might find it will need a bit higher octane gas or slight retard on the timing to run without some ping under load. I tend to leave it on myself if possible, because it lets me advance the timing a bit over normal without causing ping, which yields a bit more power. On the other hand, leaving it off gives you a hotter cylinder which should also yield a bit more power. Its probably about an even trade, but keeping it intact keeps it more legal should emissions testing ever hit my area.

You have to plug the exhaust manifold, but the intake you can take off the vac line to the egr valve and it should be okay with the large hole open, provided your EGR valve closes down tight. You can also cut a plate to fit in place of the valve and just close it off completely. I think luvrestoration has pre-made plates.

Don't take it for granted, you live too close to Boise not to be sucked into mandantory emissions tests eventually. Although it's nce to know these little 4 bangers are so clean running. Before this summer I was living in Coeur D Alene and figured to get sucked into emissions tests the way the area was growing and being next to Spokane. Now I'm 30 miles south of the Canadian border and feeling smug that I've left the test possibility behind.

well what year is your truck ezekiel. i think the state law here is if its a pre74 model than your exsempt. either that or run the thing on propane. running propane in idaho is exsemption for smog testing.

I left southern Idaho in the late 70's, cuz it was getting crowded, and moved to the Idaho Panhandle. I just left there this past summer, cuz it was too crowded, and moved to NE Washington at the edge of the Selkirks 30 miles from Canada. What are you Californians gonna do when you hit the Canadian border?
