Ok I have 2 spare motors now ones a 350 target master and the other is a 327 that is suppose to put out 380 hp. I have never driven anything with a 327 in it. Im guessing that the 350 is probably going to make more torque and less hp they way they sit now. The 350 is a target master which kind of makes me lose interest in it, especially after looking at all the imperfections in the block. What are the pros and cons of the different motors? I dont really know anything about 327s one thing I have been wondering about is the flex plate. will the flex plate on my 283 that is in my truck work on the 327 or do I have to get another one?

283 should work. I'd personally go with the 327.

Yeah Im thinking the 327 is the one. The good thing is its allready assembled and ready to go just have to put the distributer in it and change the pulleys and flex plate.

ok. the main difference between the 350 and the 327 is the stroke. the 350 has a 3.48in stroke and the 327 has a 3.25in stroke. since the 327 has a shorter stroke, that means it gonna rev faster and moke more hp than torque.

can you give me the casting number from the 283? there was some years of the 283 that had thicker cylinder walls, so you could bore it out .125 to make the bore an even 4inches. with the 4inch bore and the 283s 3 inch stroke will make a 301.5. and with the right heads that have the right springs, and everything else that flows really good, you could have yourself a 8000rpm motor.
then find yourself a nice muncie or some sort of 4 speed, and youd have yorself a wicker ground pounder!

but if the 327 is in almost workin, id say use that. the 327 is a great motor. just dont get rid of that 283. thats a good motor too.

I never have checked the casting numbers on the 283 allthough it has been on my mind. I bought the truck with the 283 allready in it and it is covered in old oil and grime. From the day I bought the truck I planned to pull the 283 and change it out with a 350 or 400. In all my circle track track experiance I would have to say the 400 is my favorite motor because of the low end torque they make. I just started to rip into my 350 that I planned on building then the 327 came into the picture so thats what I am going to use since its pretty much ready to bolt in. I dont know what I am going to do with the 283 as far as Im concerned its a pile of crap that needs more money and time into it than its worth to me. Its so wore out that it wont even do a burnout unless you can get it going around a corner with the front wheels turned sharp.

327s rev like an SOB! My dads 57 has a 69 327 in it and it revs out to 8,000rpm no problem. He has taken it as high as 10,000rpm whith no ill results.

I just looked the casting number up on my 327 it says its a 68 camaro block. The heads on it are off a 70,71 truck. I took the valve covers off and changed them out with some cast aluminum Holley covers the heads look clean enough to eat off of.

check the casting numbers on the heads on the target motor. If they are 993 heads then those are some of the best heavy duty casting heads that chevy made. they have a lot of meat on them and a great port design over the 882's which are prone to cracking. the only downfall is that they are 76 cc chambers. yeah target motors are junk Hecho in mexico but keep the heads if they are 993's

Im pretty sure the heads are junk I checked the casting numbers a while back for the guy I got the motor from and if I remember right they were the 882s. They say mexico on them first thing I noticed after pulling the valve covers LOL so Im allmost willing to bet money that they arent worth using especially because the studs are press in.

How many miles are on the 350 gabe? Is it a good stock runner? Im just curious. I would ever consider hot rodding one of those, but a good runner for something.

Don't kid yourself, a 350 is able to spin at 8000 rpm's plus. Every weekend at the race track you can find about 40 sprint cars with a 350 at 9000 rpm's. I will have a sprint car motor in my luv pretty soon.

Well I was referring to the made in mexico block.. Im not bad mouthing 350's - I run a 350 in my Nova - I would be worried about beating on that mexico block as hard as I beat on my early detroit blocks though. I only spin my 350's to 7000 since i run pretty good sized roller cams, RPM is hell on valvetrain parts when your making big power. Gabe let me know if you need a hand dropping the 327 into your truck.

I run a Jessel rocker system, lunati valves and about 200 lbs of spring pressure. I run roller cams as well and on alchole with injection and msd ignition we make 800 hp on the dyno. I should also mention that is with -10 brodax heads. We use some chevy blocks and some world blocks.

yeah maybe one of these days when I can get a day off of work. Im pissed right now its friday night and im sitting a motel room in sacramento. I ended up staying here because the boss needed someone to stay here and work tomorrow and I didnt hear anything about it until the last minute. Its hard to get anything done when you arent ever home. Maybe one these days Derek we can get together and have a beer or something. It seems like we have been chatting on here for a while now and live pretty close. Im sure you would be interested in taking a look and my salvaged abortion LOL.
