Well now that I am getting ready to install my tunnel ram I have to change from a Hei distributor to something that will clear the manifold. I was thinking the MSD- 85551 distributor. If I use that distributor Im guessing Im going to need something like the MSD 6AL CD Ignition or MSD 6A CD Ignition? If that is what I need do I need to buy a seperate coil? or does the Msd ignition boxes that I mentioned above act as a coil? do I need to buy a wiring harness for all this stuff or what? I dont know jack about the MSD stuff if you didnt notice allready and I want to order the parts I need right away I dont want to buy stuff I dont need and I dont want to not order the stuff I do need and have to wait a month to get it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The MSD 6A and 6AL both require a separate coil, anything from a stock coil all the way up to an MSD Blaster or Accel Super Coil [which is what I use with MSD]. The MSD distributors are designed to plug right in to the MSD box, with the MSD control unit provided with all necessary wiring right in the box. MSD has improved their instruction manual for the MSD 6A so that it now clearly shows in simple language and easy schematics how to wire the thing to just about any configuration you can imagine.

Distributor of choice, MDS 6A and any old coil will get you running good. On coils you don't usually see any huge improvements from the hotter units unless you're spending a lot of time with the engine twisted up pretty tight or you drag race a bunch.

does the msd 6a require all the extra stuff or will it just work with a coil? I dont really want to use all the control stuff if I dont have to I just want to make my motor run. The non hei stuff is new to me.

You can use the msd with a coil and the distributor you mentioned earlier with no other parts needed. The advantage of the 6al is the rev control which does come in handy when your lighting the tires up and get a little carried away. It can save the motor if you miss a shift or the drive line lets loose also.

Yeah the rev control sounds like a good idea I have had a drive line come un hooked from the rear end. If it would have blown the motor it would probably have done me a favor and maybe by now my 327 would be in my truck rather than on the engine stand.
