Well i have been thinking lately, i realy have no idea why i bought my curent 86trooper. So then i started thinking the axles are the same only the LUV only has 4.10 gears and the trooper has 4.55 gears. So that there seems like a good upgrade. I was just wondering if the thirds are a direct swap over or if ill have to swap the whole axle assemblies. It seems like the third members will interchange from the dimensions and stuff given in my two shop manuals...

That was one of the reasons I bought my 2nd 86 Trooper, besides needing motor parts for the one I drive. I have not torn it apart and tried, but the thirds should be interchangable from all the research I've done. Just pull the axles in the back and swap it in, and tear the front completely apart to slide the axles out and swap it in. Not a quick evening project, but not too bad. I think the install could be a day project if you had the parts out of the trooper already cleaned up and ready to go.

I was thinking of sitting the 5Spd trans and front/rear diffs from my spare trooper under a 4x4 LUV and running a 235/75R15 tire. Accurate speedo, and good power/mileage. Another thought to consider is trying the springs off the Trooper under the LUV. With the troop weighing in a fair bit more, you should get some lift from it. I need to measure the track width on the rear axle, I was hoping that the whole works might slide in there and save me from pulling the thirds at all. Might be a smidge wide though.

well i would do the spring swap as well but then my trucks rear would be up in the air too much. I like the way it sets now whith 28s and 2" of lift, its big enough to get over most obsticles yet small enough to be easilly driven. Im looking into the 4.55s for a little better driveability in trafic so its easier on my clutch. And i just cruise nice and easy down the interstate anyway... 8)

yeah i have a few things going on. I was going to tunr the Trooper into a good daily driver but that would be another project so im just taking bits here and there to make my trust LUV better. I have always whanted a little more low end grunt but have been realy pleased whith the fact my engine pulls hard (for a G180 mind you  ) to 5,000rpm. So the engine is sound so thats where the tought of the gears came from. As far as other projects, my 64 F-250 is getting stripped down and painted this month (CAT Yellow 8) ) and then theres the big guy of the Caddy LUV swap...
And natually im never down whith my 80...
