I have just purchased a 82 LUV diesel 2WD and so far very happy with it. The engine is making a noise like the tappets need adjusting. Could someone help with this or is just like adjusting any other engine. Also I have not tried yet but have to change the radio, any thing I should know here?

If there is any thing else I should know as a new owner please let me know as I intent to keep the truck for sometime

Thanks in advance

I tried to attach a .jpg picture that explains this but it would not work. I’ve got a ’81 Diesel 4 Wheel Drive and here are the steps from a Chev Shop manual.
Hope this helps.

1. Check the rocker arm shaft bolts for looseness and re-tighten as necessary before adjusting the valves. Torque is 9 to 17 foot pounds.
2. Bring either #1 or #4 piston to top dead center on the compression stroke by turning the crankshaft until timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with the pointer.(Viewing the engine from the front, the notch on the LEFT(of crankshaft pulley) is the correct one-TDC-)
3. Adjust Specs are… Cold 0.016 in------Hot 0.015 inch for BOTH Intake and Exhaust
4. Adjust as described below when Cyl 1 is at top dead center

Cyl #1 Exh and Intake,- Cyl #2 Intake,- Cyl #3 Exh, -#4- No Adj

5. Rotate engine 360 degrees( to bring #4 to TDC) align the marks, and adj as follows:

Cyl #1 No Adj - #2 Exh, --Cyl #3 Intake,- Cyl #4 Intake and Exh.

You might want to draw this out on paper before doing.

Thanks

That sounds straight forward and simple. Is there anything else that you may have learned from owning your truck that I should know? The speed is fine for me and I have say I enjoy driving around at 55-65mph. What worried was the truck dieing on hills but it seem to increase in perforamnce on the small inclide which is good. I looking for a long relationship with this vehicle as it suits a lot of my needs

Thanks

I've owned this truck since new and followed the maintenance schedule recommended by the factory.

I've recently had a problem of lack of performance. I sort of discovered the problem by not being able to "pump up" the fuel filter after replacing the filter drain valve o ring.

The engine started and ran OK, sort of .

Anyway I finally found the source of the problem , a colgged fuel filter and a inoperative fuel filter pump.( only 20,000 miles on the filter.)

I purchased a new filter assembly(from Chev). This one has a water drain valve on the top connected to a hose that runs from the bottom.

Power is back to it's usual anemic self.

So you might check your fuel filter. WIX fuel and oil filters are available for these trucks.
