 Post subject: Headers in general?
PostPosted: Wed Feb 12, 2003 3:18 pm
I was wondering who is running what kind of headers and is it fairly simple to set em up I am thinking of buying some block huggers I found em cheap on Ebay I was wondering if anyone is running the block huggers and are they easy to install and what about the rest of the exhaust set up? any Info would help greatly. Thanks again.

Hey Husker if your going to make a set of those mounts that i sent you the prints for, standard block huggers wont work. They'll dump into the center of them. Check out Sanderson Headers out of San Fran. Bryan

I had a mechanic in monroe hook me up with the perfect set up that i have now, but will change in the near future. the drivers side is off an s10 header set,(hooker), and the other side is from a camaro(dont know the year). they both dump back in that little spot on the sides of the motor and are all the way back against the fire wall bottom, and hug the tranny out the back. It was a major feat for the exhaust guy in monroe to weld it in that tight area. he did a nice job.

Ill send pics.

the problem is that it heats the floor up :onfire: and i dont want it that way permanantly. It will seriously start to melt your shoe. I plan on dumpin the t- bars and askin you guys what coil overs to put in. thats when ill find some new headers. As for looks, though, it is tight.

I'm using Sanderson CC3's i believe. With these you'll have to run a mini starter. It's tight, but looks good. Sandersons' brochure used to be free, give them a call. I think they ran me $200. Bryan

If you go with hooker style mounts, u can use standard block huggers. Mine dump right above the crossmember, kinda of a pain in the ass to weld the pipes up, but that is why i had the muffler shop do it and the fact that i can't weld  . Don't have a clear pic but mine are flowtech and they were about $90 new. As for the rest the exhaust, too many possibilities to list, but any muffler guy should be able to do anything u want.

bob, do you have a part number on those flowtech headers? and curious where you got them (summit / jegs) and how do they work good, tight to anything. i have the ram horn manifolds and they will work but i would like a set of headers. thanks

Try wrapping the headers. You can get the fabric from several performance dealers(Summit, Jegs...) It works real well at controlling the heat. It also improves performance too!

Ive got a header heat wrap story. A guy in monroe with a 350 1/2 ton 4x4 installed some of that fiberglass looking (white) header wrap. It held the heat in so good that he warped his headers, and all the piped began to crack. his header bolts got so hot they were hard to get out. No lie! The idea behind it seems sound, but id ask around. Ive thought of installing it to keep the heat away from my floor, but i think it should not be wrapped too tight. this guys install was perfect, tight, neat looking. Douched everything.

fyi

Most header companys will not honor their warranty if you wrap your headers. Bryan

CRAIG - I got them from PAW about 3 yrs ago. They dont list them in their catalog anymore, so i checked summit and they are out of stock, jegs lists them for $116.99(summit same price) pn# 387-11000. The exit flange is parallel to the oil pan rail and about a 1/2" away from the block. U have to use straight plug heads as well. Hedman also has some block huggers that are a little different in design. Hope this helps

Is it possible to insulate the floor board itself? It would stop the heat and and also deaden sound. Plus the header wouldn't be susceptible to cracking.

there is a under rug insulation, that resembles any of the stuff youve crossed when youve pulled up the rug on any car. Kinda grey, fibery.
