well personally i wouldnt go for a 7004r, by rather a 2004r from a mid to late 80s oldsmobile. if your inclined with money have the 2004r rabuilt to GN stage 2 specs. theres olds people that are running 2004rs behind very built 455s and they ave no problems. now just remeber to get a late model 2004r.

another good thing about the 2004r is its the same length as the th350 and it uses the same yoke.

hope this helps.

I'm using a 700r4, but I am only hitting 200hp. Its always shifted firm I did by a B&M towing shift kit and Hughes towing torque converter about 1300 rpm stall. the converter is installed but the shift kit is not. I didn't hear any bad things about the 700r until I bought mine. The early modules had big problems the on in my truck was suppose to be out of an 84 K-5 blazer witch had me a little worried. A friend of mine had an 84 K-5 and he went through 4 tranies 3 rebuilt and one new form GM. farmer_joe252 is right stay with the later years. I crossed the numbers of the trans and it is an 89. The 700r is also called the 4L60 or 4L60E not sure what the other numbers are for the 200r. I've got about 30,000 hard miles on this trany and 1,700 was when towed My 79 LUV from Phoenix AZ to Fayetteville AR. The only problem I had was the trany temp hit 280 degrees going into Flagstaff but was perfect the rest of the trip I get about 20 mpg(not while towing then it may get 10 mpg) as long as I don't open up the secondaries and I've had the truck up to 110 -120 mph. Yes I know not a smart thing to do with a Lifted 4x4 but it was fun. At some point I hope to change to a 5 speed manual.

I put a 700 (out of a 88 trans am) in mine but i only drove for about 20 miles or so then i parked it and never got around to finishing the rest of the truck. Now its being sold to a local kid. I rebuilt the tranny with a TCI pro-master kit, 2000 stall and derale cooling pan. It is bigger than the th350, i had to clearance my tunnel a little more and the mount was about 2" further back so i had to cut back my crossmember mount (the 700 pan is longer than the th350 too). The yoke is the same but i had to shorten the driveshaft by about 3" but that only cost me about $30. You will want a 700r4 that has the 30spline inputshaft because it is stronger than the older 27 spline. I dont remeber which years had them though, but 88up is safe bet. A 4l60 is pretty close to the same, maybe some extra electronics but a 4l60E is fully electronic shift so it would need some type of computer to run it. I've always heard that the 700r4 is generally good to about 450hp. I wasn't aware that a 200r4 would bolt up to a sbc but if it does then that is an option as well. Another thing is that these are 4speeds with a lockup converter so you will need something to control lockup. i personally went with the PainlessWiring lockup kit because it was a nice setup that uses a brake switch, load switch, and the 4th gear pressure switch. B&M and somebody else has lockup kits that you manually control but i dont like those becasue if you forget to lockup the converter in 4th gear while cruising, you run the chance of overheating the tranny.
