Hey,
a neighbor has asked me to look into fixing his 73 LUV.
Seems it quit awhile back, and would only sputter when he tried and start it back up.
He's gone through several different people telling him, several different solutions, carb, points, fuel pump, etc.
I took a look yesterday, first pulling off the chain access cover from the valve cover. Just as I thought, lots of slack in the chain, and where I believe there should be a chain guide (slipper, like my toyota has) I find a chewed up small piece of aluminum rotating on a timing cover through bolt.
Is there anywhere on the WWW a person can download pics or diagrams of the layout of the timing chain parts, or does anyone have them available to attach to an e-mail.
I'd hate to have to buy a manual to find out whether or not I want to tackle the fix for this truck.
I know how the internal workings of an engine go together, but I'm wondering if it will be worth fixing at all.

Seem to be having the same problem with my 75. For now, all I can help with is a place to get a new timing chain kit http://www.rockauto.com and tell you that I have a book on the way that I got on ebay. I think I saw a book on http://www.luvrestoration.com too.

This truck came into Washington state from Arkansas and though it's in really good shape for it's age, even has AR antique vehicle plates on it. It does have quite a bit of smurf poo holding some gaskets in place.
The owner also mentioned he'd like to do away with the dual point distributor if possible.
I've never been inside one of these 1.8 L suzie engines.
Lots of Toys, and about a year ago a samurai engine brought to me in pieces, in lots of boxes, someone needed put together. That case was different, as everything inside was brand new, and as a complete unit, you could tuck it under your arm and carry it around.
I'll look into a manual here locally if the owner does not have one.
Just didn't want to add that cost to the repair if the info was available online.
If the owner can find the key his 2 yo. seems to have lost, so we can do more with the truck, I'll have a better idea where I might start.
I've found Autozone's website lists a complete timing set available special order for $108.99, or assorted other related parts, I'm not sure what the difference is between primary and secondary listed on both cam and crank gears, other than price ?
Then there's also the listing for chain tensioners, both primary and crankshaft, which to me makes no sense at all.

i have a service manaul for that year, but am having computer issues . i can scan up what you need tomorrow evening if you still need it by then. just let me know what all you need and i will see what i can do

That would be great, I'd really appreciate the help, if you had diagrams of the timing chain layout, ie; tensioner locations, and such.
I have access to any parts dealers I could choose from.
But would like to see how many parts, and of what designs prior to saying yay or nay on doing the repair.

ill be back at McChord October 9th. If your still having problems i could probly help a bit. My only exp is whith the latter engines (78and up) but i have done quite a few engine rebuilds.

pics do the job.
Explains what the truck's owner was saying about being told there were 2 chains.
I made the assumption they were talking of the double row of chain.
It will still need both chains, and probably tensioners, and chain guiderails for both sides of the engine.
at least I can discuss it with the man, and have a better idea of what I'm talking about.
Printed the pages from the images, and can show him what it'll entail.

Got my kit from rockauto today. It's made by Cloyes and seems to be good quality. Came with all the guides and tensioners too. I guess I know what I'm doing for the next week or so...

sounds like fun....
