I was told that if i change from points to electric ignition i would receive better gas mileage and maybe a little more horse power . not to mention never having to change points i emailed retro rockets for the information such as pars cost and instruction for their product below is the reply that i received. can any body tell me where to find the nr i dont have a parts book it is a stock 1.8l

I would expect your '80 Luv already has electronic ignition. If it is a points distributor please send us the distributor number and we'll see if an Ignitor is available for it.

psh, newbies...
Anyhow getting this thread back on track. What was posted above should be corect. Though bear in mind the ignition set up from an 82 is a relatively hassle free drop in.

I've been wanting to do the swap to my stocker to the ignition with an 81-82, but all I ever find in the yards are 72 to 80 luvs. Probably if I do swap, then I will start seeing all kinds of them!

As usual nothing is easy for me i contacted retro rocket and they said they didnt have an igniter for my distributer. i decided to try the 82 drop in idea . It did not come with a control module and they didnt show one that woud fit so do you guys have any more ideas
Also cranes said that my 1980 should already have an electronic and not a points

Just thought I'd chime in with another vote for Crane is wrong, 80 has points ignition exactly like 76-79. (72-75 too, but they use a different distributor) 81 was the first year for electronic.

Yeah crane has also told me that 76-80 should have electronic. I talked to the guy long enough that he said if it did have points for some reason then you would get the 231 kit number. Which is the kit I got and have already installed.
