My axle is being reworked and while it's torn apart, i'd like to install longer wheel studs. The stock studs are 1/2 x 20, 1.5" in lenght(bottom of the head to the end of the threads) press in type, .6 shank diameter. For some reason the local parts stores do not have these studs that are 1/4" longer thread length. The closest they found had a shank length that was too long (the nut would bottom out before the stud would pull into the wheel flange completely, with the wheel in place). I dont think i'd need "racing caliber" studs, just standard grade should do. Shouldn't they easily be available? Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this problem?!?!?! The dimensions are: 1/2 x 20, 1.75 in length, .6 shank dia, .4 min / .6 max shank length. Thanks...

the only ones ive been able to find are the real long ones thru the performance shops. the only thing i can think of is to buy the long ones and cut them down to what you need. mine are just short enough for the tech inspectors to gripe.so i`m gonna go with the long studs and lug nuts that are open on the ends. later terry

I located some studs that were just about 1/4" longer than what was original to the Ford axle. It's as close as i can get to what i wanted with out going to a " Race Approved" type stud. The old setup was working out but i just didn't feel comfortable with the amount of threads that were being used. I think i can feel more confident knowing i have a little bit better bite holding my wheels on.

I gained about .2 worth of threads. It doesn't seem like much of a gain but if you multiply that X 5, there's a gain of 1" of threads overall holding the wheel on. I found them at Advance Auto Parts. P/N 98169. They are 1.75" nominal length. .620 knurl dia. shank length to the first thread is about .62. The other studs i've found had a longer, tapered shank and the lugnut would bottom out on the shank before everything tightened down. The shank on the new studs are shouldered like the original ones.
