My LUV has an external fuel pump down by the fuel tank that somebody added on. Do other diesels have this pump? It is hard wired (on when ignition on). Most other Bosch pump-driven diesels (my jetta and passat) only have an injection pump that pulls in the fuel. Obviously, my truck is not stock, and started out as a gasser.

FWIW, I left the stock fuel injection pump in my fuel tank when I put the diesel in the Sonoma. I didn't feel like taking the tank off to remove the pump, so I left it. Good if I ever run out of fuel (which is very unlikely, as I never let it run down anywhere close enough to run out) as it will make priming a piece of cake. Hasn't been a problem with the injection pump so far, as after 25000 miles I'm sure something would have been noticed.

Just my 2ยข. :D

Not mine, the only thing i beleive that sucks out the fuel is the mech. fuel pump attached to the motor.

Almost all diesels have 2 pumps. 1 The injection pump and 2 The lift pump (fuel pump). The lift pump could be in the fuel tank or on the frame (in most cases and this will supply fuel to the injection pump which will return the fuel back to the tank, pump or accumulator via a fuel pressure regulator,. I am not sure on the Luv Diesel but this is what most diesels have.

VW would have to be excluded from this "most" list. The 3 VW's I had, and all other ones I looked at, didn't have any lift pump. The injector pump was the lift pump.
However, the other brands I can think of have lift pumps.... :D

but yet our 77 Benz 300D has no lift pump either...

However when the luv i have now(was my fathers) was converted to a diesel, he left EVERYTHING in place... Even the little bit of gas that was left in the tank  ...

as said above it really shouldn make a difference, except when you do lose prime, it would only be a few seconds until it would be ready to go again...

Just curious, what model of VW did you have? Different set-ups for different markets maybe?

OK, gassers. That makes sense.

Unless, of course, you have a diesel Scirocco. 8O

No, But Eric @ VW restorations is building one. He had Jim-Diesel Geeks TDI Corrado, which just sold on e-bay. A regular, non TDI would be easy to swap.

Well, since we're on the subject of unusual diesel combos, I always wanted to put a turbo diesel in a Fiero. They were originally designed to be a 2 seat commuter car, so how fitting to have a diesel.

OK, it's wierd. But I'd still like to do it. And may, some day.

I seen in a magazine once that a guy fit a 455 Olds Tornado engine and tranny into a Fiero (Tornado is FWD for those who don't know), and there was even some trunk room left. I bet that thing set you back in your seat when you floored it! Handling would be a tad hair-raising I bet....

I figured since the VW is common, and so are dead Fieros, and the VW is FWD, it shouldn't be that impossible to do. The more I think about it, the more I want to build one.

I have to run. Gotta find a couple of cars.....

TDI Fiero would be cool. Always thought a Porsche 914 with a TDI would be cool too. TDI Luv is do able too. Almost anything, and not out of this world $$$$ wise either.

Richard.

Man, a TDI 914 would be VERY cool. I just figure you better make it bullit proof, because no doubt Porschefiles would want to kill you for "destroying" a Porsche.

Better yet, use a rare 550 Spyder or something. 8O Ok, I'm getting silly. The TDI can be boosted up nicely, so I'm sure the 914 would work rather well. It would be a blast to blow some "sports cars" off the road, at least on a twisty road. I'd have to turn the pump up enough to smoke nicely at full throttle, just so they don't make ANY mistake they were humiliated by a DIESEL!

I can see it.
"Hey, Harry. Why you look so glum, buddy?"
"I, um, got blown into the weeds by, err,a diesel. A DIESEL Porsche 914."
"You mean to tell me they got by your new SuperBlahBlah XR Turbo S? With a DIESEL?!?"
Harry hangs is head. "Yea."
"Wow. You suck!"

That would be the Sh$t . 914 are the poor red headed step child of the Porsche. Only ones that would care are the 914 folks. check out renegrade hybrids. They make V8 kits for the 914. V8 fit, TDI NP.

Richard.

45 MPG or better. I got 45 MPG out of my 97 Passat TDI all the time.
