Well i was over at hotgemini.com and i have been inspired. This is a bad thing becouse i dont even have the money to finish the curent project. But anyway, some of the guys over there are running injected turbo charged 1.6L. Well these are the same blocks as our 1.8L. And the injection manifold look oddly like the one my 2.6L trooper had. So now in therory i just need forged pistons and a tubo to make this work. Well the guy who rebuilt my 1.8L odered me forged pistons on request so thats not even an issue. Man i am destined to be an old broke man whith crazy forced induction trucks that most people would have crushed. Ill keep you guys posted on the reaserch i do and my findings...

well i ran acrost a guy who was building a G180 on there. He said he swapped injection and intake off a 4ZE1. Well thats the trusty 2.6L my troop had in it so i guess it works!

So MEPR, Are you taking a and putting a head(from a gemini) on your 1.8? or are you going to use a 2.6 out of a trooper and use the head on it?

The intake runners on the 4Zx1 series motors line up with those of the Gxxx series. There are a couple little minor differences but nothing much to worry about though. The only gotcha I can think of is the little hole between the rear runners that goes into the water jacket on the head of 1.8/1.9 motors. There is nothing on the 4Z motors like it, and I dunno if the FI intake would block it off. (The 4ZD1 2.3L carb intake would not) Certainly it would be a wiring adventure to get the FI running, but I think it could be done. Toughest stuff would be finding an oil source for the turbo, and places on the block for the proper sensors if you run a stock Isuzu turbo computer. (Knock sensor, etc).

Personally I'm leaning more toward going with a 2.6L motor and building it out. Either going cheap/easy and sticking a 2.3L carb intake and Weber on, or going full out and building a Turbo 2.6L. With my budget for time and money it will likely end up being a carb motor if I ever get to it.

I have pretty much the same idea as 800xl, building up a 2.6, and keeping it FI, but using the throttle body and MAS off of a 1993 or 94 Amigo, as the throttle body is about 14% larger and the MAS has a larger bore than the stock Trooper piece. Build up would be to bore it .040 over, forged pistons, Calmini cam, header, and a custom K&N filter system. Might also go with larger injectors too. I figured with all that done the engine would be good for 150-160 hp and 170-180 tq. not too shaby for a LUV, i'd still be getting 20-25mpg too!!!! But of course thats way down the road

you can do ALOT better than 150-160hp our of a 2.6L. Thats what im pushing whith my 1.8L (est. 160hp and 170lb ft). Stock a trooper 2.6L makes 125hp and 150lb ft.
And something i have been thinking about recently is using an Isuzu V-6. Theres numorouse companies that supercharger kits for em to push up to 186 rwhp! 8O I have been thinking about doing a v-8 swp into one of my other LUVs but i think it would be cooler to try a 3.5v-6 Isuzu whith a supper chager on it...

That would be a novel upgrade. The DI motor would be fun all around too, though I don't know for sure if the supercharger can be bolted to them. If you are going to go to the trouble of bolting in something with fuel injection and figuring out all that wiring, you might as well make it something interesting.

I'm still working up to getting a 2.6 myself, just because I know what kind of budget a 3.5L would require. Finding a donor is tougher, the motor could have issues if it is used, and buying a new motor is quite pricey. It would be cheaper to V8, solid front axle swap, upgrade the rear axle, and all that. Besides, I'd like something that is closer to the stock motor. More power by a ways, similar sound, and very little fabrication needed.
