Well my tranny has been making some noises so i figured what the heck ill try running 90wieght to quiet it down. I know my dad being an old school traditional guy put the first 200,000miles on this truck whith 90 wieght in it . When i got the truck i was supprised to lean they run 30wieght motor oil. But anyway, the tranny dosnt wine or make any noises and shifts alot smoother. I was thinking, the only real reason to run motor oil in a tranny is economy. Thats what all the little cars and such run (that or ATF). Becouse realy since a gear box works off of splashing there needs to be surface tension in order for the gears and bearings to lubricate properly. And im shure 30 wieght does it but from today, 90 wieght does it alot better. Just thought i would share and let you guys know, im running 80-90 from now on. And for the sceptics (800xl im shure youll be one  ), ill keep you all posted.

I also always run 80-90 in my LUV and my dads 4wd. Works a lot better than motor oil like you said. I use the same in the rearend.

Heh, I'm actually less of a skeptic on that than you might expect. You are right that it most likely is all about economy. Sloshing around 90w vs 30w is probably worth maybe about 1hp in the grand scheme of things. The only concern I'd have is that the bearings might not take up the 90w as easy as they do 30w. I had one truck that came with 90w in the trans, and put a lot of miles on it with, and after I put 30w into it with no problems at all. I've also heard enough people here running 90w with no problems to believe it will work. In fact, I've never heard one tale of woe that could be attributed to 90w in the gearbox, mostly just "its quieter now".

My 77 has a fairly bad tailshaft leak, and whines in 3rd something awful. It has had both since I've owned it (nearing 200k miles since then) so I'm not terribly worried, but I've been thinking about going to 80-90 next oil change on it just to see how it goes. Might slow the leakage, and should help quiet things down. I would not go so far as to put the thicker stuff in it, like 80-140 or something. That would be pushing things a little too far. Hopefully I'll have a 2.6L and a 5Spd to put in that truck before too long now anyway and I won't ever get the chance to change the tranny oil. ;)

I have to admit that I have been known to put a little slick50 in with oil or lube. I also used it im bonnie's mazda mpv which has a little mazda whine in rear diff. Helped a lot.
