Heh, I'm actually less of a skeptic on that than you might expect. You are right that it most likely is all about economy. Sloshing around 90w vs 30w is probably worth maybe about 1hp in the grand scheme of things. The only concern I'd have is that the bearings might not take up the 90w as easy as they do 30w. I had one truck that came with 90w in the trans, and put a lot of miles on it with, and after I put 30w into it with no problems at all. I've also heard enough people here running 90w with no problems to believe it will work. In fact, I've never heard one tale of woe that could be attributed to 90w in the gearbox, mostly just "its quieter now".
My 77 has a fairly bad tailshaft leak, and whines in 3rd something awful. It has had both since I've owned it (nearing 200k miles since then) so I'm not terribly worried, but I've been thinking about going to 80-90 next oil change on it just to see how it goes. Might slow the leakage, and should help quiet things down. I would not go so far as to put the thicker stuff in it, like 80-140 or something. That would be pushing things a little too far. Hopefully I'll have a 2.6L and a 5Spd to put in that truck before too long now anyway and I won't ever get the chance to change the tranny oil.
