Hello to all -

I am having turn signal problems and have done a search looking at past posts but haven't come up with my answer, so here goes:

My 1980's turn signals now work on only one side, the left. My right side blinkers just quit about 2 weeks ago. My hazard lights work fine all the way around, but my right blinkers don't. When I turn on my right blinker, the indicator light on the dash comes on solid and stays on as long as the blinker lever is in the "on" position for the right blinker. There is nothing at my right turn signals when this happens, though. My left signals work fine. Do you guys think that my problem is the turn signal switch itself or a flasher or what? I'm not good with electrical stuff, but the more I work with this truck the more I become acquainted with various electrical problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :D .

have you checked your bulbs.alot of times when the bulbs blow it will act that way,if they are ok it might be in the turn signal arm,i would unplug it and use a test light.turn the signal on the side that does not work to see if you are getting power to the lights.you can use a test light just to check power at all the points that are not working.you should be able to pinpoint whats not working

I had the same trouble with mine. All the bulbs work fine. I ended up fixing something when I switched my steering wheel to the Mikado. I took off the turn signal switch while I was at it, and when I put it back on and tightened everything up good it all worked fine. I also noticed when i had it off that two really really tiny nuts came off and layed right there in the plastic piece under the steering column, so I put those back on. I think they were like 7/64 or something really small like that. So that might have had something to do with my trouble ? You might want to check your wiring harnesses where the lights plug in at. When I pulled my tail lights to put new reverse lights in I had a really hard time unplugging due to years of moisture and dirt. The connector pins were green with corrosion some too. When I plugged them back in they were not working right either, so I plugged and unplugged them a few times to loosen things up and I blew the dust and dirt out. I plugged them back in and pushed them in really hard and they all worked again. I probably should somehow clean the connector pins, I am sure that would help, but I am not quite sure how to go about that. Anyone with some info on that, it would be appreciated. Maybe clean them with Q-tips and rubbing alcohol ? Anyway, this might be something to consider when checking connections. Good luck, and I hope you get them to all work.

My driver's side turns signals worked properly, my hazards worked properly, but my Passenger signal would just stay on solid.

Turned out that the contacts in the socket weren't properly lined up with the contacts on the blinker bulb. I just twisted the contacts around from the back of the socket so that they lined up right with the bulb set in the socket, and viola both my turn signals worked normally again.

if you go to the parts house the sell so stuff that is called terminal cleaner, after you spray that in there you need to put some dielectric grease in the terminal to prevent the corrosion form coming back

My 77 does something similar every 3-4 years only it is both signals. The solution, odd as it sounds, is to turn the turn signal switch on then flip on the hazards, then flip off the turn signal. Every truck has its quirks, I guess I'm glad mine is simple, if baffling.

Yours sounds to me like the flasher unit is bad but it is odd that it still works on one side. I don't think they cost all that much (unless you get the electronic multi-load trailer kind) and it would be a very quick thing to check. From my experience though, if the column switch dies it just won't do anything on that side. You are probably looking at the flasher, or wiring out to the lights themselves. Could try unplugging the front light or the harness in the back and see if it helps. The rear harness can be reached right behind the license plate. The plug can be a bugger to get apart though, so you might want to pull the rear light assembly and unplug your bad side there instead. That won't tell you about the rear harness section though. Seems like most of my wiring issues on LUVs have been in there due to screwy trailer plug wiring by prior owners.

Thanks to all who have replied so far. I'm taking the next 2 days off, so I should be able to work on it hopefully tomorrow afternoon and figure out what the problem is. I figure I'll start with bulbs/plugs and go up to flasher from there. Hopefully I can figure it out. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Hey tuff- good to see another Mississippi member on here. I'm in Meridian, by the way.

I had exactly that happen to my truck. turned out the pass side front blinker was the problem. the socket was rusted up. Got the bulb out, took a dremel with one of the little wire wheels ( it will fit inside) and cleaned it up. Problem gone. installed new gasket too...

Thanks for all of your replies. It turns out my problem is the rear socket itself. It had just enought rust and crap inside it to cause the bulb to lose contact, I guess. I'm going to give it a good cleaning/sanding and I should be good to go. I have another wiring/connection problem though. Now the right side blinker works with the headlights off, but when I turn them on, and then cut my blinker on, the blinker just comes on solid and does not blink. Who knows???? It seems like it's always something.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone started making "new" turn signal assemblies for these trucks?
