Its about time to start the back half of my truck Im going to build a narrowed frame set it up for a 4 link and use a 9" rear end. My question is would it be cheaper to buy a custom fabricated rear end or find one and have all the machine work done? I allready have a stock housing but I have not checked into the prices for the machine work. Also wondering about a 10 or 12 bolt GM rear end. I dont know exactly what I am going to do yet any advice would be helpfull on getting started

well it al depends on how deep your pockets are.
personally, i would build the rearend myself. i would just get a good case, a nice thirdmember with good gearing and limited slip, some 31 spline axles and maybe some disc brakes.

I have just picked up my diff from the drive line shop. They cut the 9 inch housing down to 25 5/8 inch so withe the axels installed it is 30 1/2 inch. I watched them set it up in a jig and weld on it. Let the pros do it.

having a shop narrow a rear end and then buying some correct length aftermarket axles so you can assemble it yourself is a good alternative to a $$$$$$$$$$$$ currie or other rear end. I did my whole narrowed 9 for $750 including the trac-loc 3.70 center chunk.

narrowing a 10 or 12 will be considerably more $$$ and take some more effort.

I agree with Luvsadrag. Best of both, but it is all done professionally.
