I replaced the compressor on the S-10 and recharged the system with r-134a. Put one can oil/134 and two cans 134 in (35 oz total). The air leaving the vents is around 70-75 degrees and the compressor cycles way more than it should. I threw a pressure gage on the low side and with outside air temp of 107 the pressure was 55. i checked it after driving it to work this am and the air temp outside was 75 and the pressure was 65. According to what i have seen the pressure should be around 35-40 with air temp of 75. do you think this is a servicing problem and i should get it sucked out and recharged or maybe some other things to look at? Any help would be appreciated as the 105+ days here are rough...

Was the system evacuated before charging?

it was evacuated but i am thinking it wasn't done right. after i went to this shop, i heard they have no skill with a/c stuff... i think the servicing is my problem.. i found another inexpensive place to take it and have them evacuate and the charge it up. hopefully i'll have air soon.. it's hot here

have you had any luck with that a/c? the blazer i picked up is pretty hot and the guy converted it to 134a but it only worked for a season till it quit.

is there a saftey on the compressor that doesn't let the clutch kick unless there's a charge? the compressor won't turn on from the dash so i jumpered it and it kicked right on and sounded good, but no cold.....i don't want to charge it till i find the suspected leak and get the compressor working off the dash switch.

you don't happen to be a member of a good s-10 forum do you?

to be honest, i don't know much about the system. there is a high and low pressure cutoff switch and if your pressure is too low your system will cycle a ton. if it's too high it will cut off until the pressure is low enough.

i don't know if mys10.com is a good forum or not, as they didn't really try and answer my questions. i got more response here on a non-s10 board.. 8O

i combed the archives at some s-10 site that i can't for the life of me remember the name of...... i had to register to use the searck function.

there's a low pressure cutoff switch. the theory is if there's not enough charge there's not enough lubricant. just to test it i pumped a little nitrogen into the system and the compressor kicked on as soon as i hit the switch.

in studying the design of the system, it looks like wherever my leak is, it will be easy to fix there's only 8 connections and two hoses.

i need some advice though..... should i run some a/c lube and die through it or just evac and charge it with a stop leak/condiioner? the guy i bought it from said it held charge since it was new but after the 134a conversion kit didn't work the next summer. it did work for the year he did it though, so it held charge for a while.

i did some reading up at autoacforums.com and they seem to mostly be a/c professionals.

i just did the 134 conversion and still need to get the evac and service done. but i don't know why the conversion cause a leak... unless an o-ring gave out???

did you change the ac lines? r134 has alot smaller molecules the r12, thus r134 will actualy got thrue the walls of the lines. same with the orings. if you havent changed them then you need to do so

got the system evacuated and i put 28 oz of 134a in and it's cycling a lot.....i'm getting a little cold air, but there's too much cycling.

does anybody know how much refrig i needed from evac? the more i put in the less it cycled, so i'm guessing there's still not enough.

it's my understanding the whole system holds 2.5 lbs so you might still be short of full. that'll cause the cycling and the warmer air.

I've done this a few times to some other vehicles I've had...

With it cycling like this, it does sound like there is not enough freon in it. You may want to find a good gauge that has some color codes on it. A lot of the conversion kits have them. If not, they are cheap. If it were me, I would put another small can in it and see if the cycles get any longer.

You do know to run the engine with the A/C on max while you are charging it up, don't you?

Also, there's a low pressure switch on your accumulator (I think)... it's cheap and easy to replace. You may want to buy one either way.

Your orifice tube may be plugged up also. They are also cheap.

Let me know if this helps. I'll be on late tomorrow night.

when you shut the pump off, is there supposed to be a little hissing sound?
(sounds like freon reliving pressure from the high back to the low side) it only lasts for a few seconds and sounds like it's coming from the condenser.

when i first start the a/c the first cycle lasts about 25-30 seconds then 8-10 sec cycles. at 13 bucks a can i can put one more in and see what happens, but i'm worries i'm blowing dough into the wind.
