'81's of course.   . Really tho, anything for my 81 is hard to find, if I had to do it over I would get a pre-81 model.

75 would be mine because it was the first year of front disk brakes and they still had the 4 headlight design.

The best year is whatever luv you get.

I personally have had a 74, 75, 76, and 2 80's I kinda prefer the 76 through 80, Though I do like the front on the earlier trucks.

what about a year later...the 76 has disks, 4 headlights and was the first year of the newer style motor, and the first year with the bigger front bumper...
:D

My opinion. I like the seventies through 1980. I have owned four of them, and with any luck at all will be able to get another one. They all have the very rugged frame with five crossmembers, and have very rugged suspensions and drive trains that will allow you to drive them hard, and not hurt them. The engine is also good if you don't race them or get them hot. The torsion bar front suspension allows for relatively easy installation of the old 350/350 Chevy combination, and I've heard of people driving them for years like that without blowing the rear end. The third member carnage happens when the slicks are bolted on. I like the dual and single headlight look, and the look of the truck in general. California folks talk about the emissions problem with the addition of a V8 if the truck less than thirty years old. I don't see any Luvs on the street any more in south Texas, but I always see several at the drag strip. In fact the only Luv truck I've seen on the street was so cool looking I had to follow the guy to ask him about it. Turns out it was Wicked Mayhem who had an excellent example of a clean well done Chevy V8 TPI Luv. Only bad thing about Luv's is parts availability. From what I've seen on this site, Luv truck people are creative and have found ways to customize and make better what they cannot find in parts. If you'd like to know more, just start asking questions. I've seen the Luv owner's here cover any answers you may have questions about.

i personaly like the 72's just cuz the tail lights, if it wasnt for the tail lights i would have to say 81 just because of the interior, i like the dash more then the early ones, they last longer

I like aspects of several years. I'm not all that fond of the 81-82 style, but that did introduce the diesel to the LUV.

Here is my picks for a set of parts:

-77 grill/lights (there are FOUR lights!)
-77 doors with wing windows
79-80 4x4 frame/main body
-79 side marker lights (don't like the 80 ones)
75-76 bed (more tie downs)
-77 windshield gasket (metal trim strip instead of that plastic crap)
-77 rain gutter trim (metal vs plastic again)
77-80 tail lights for the orange turn signal lenses
80 Gauge cluster (has 4x4 light)

Of course Mikado trim (I mostly like the 77 and up style emblems) inside and I have a few slightly newer ideas on powertrain:

87- 2.6L Isuzu motor with 86-87 2.3L carb intake
86- 5 Spd Isuzu transmission
84-86 powersteering

An alternative would be a turbo diesel 2.2L motor, or the turbo kit and FI intake from an Isuzu Impulse hooked to the 2.6L

I have to agree with the LUV the year of LUV you got sentiment though. I have pretty much every year 76-80, so I guess I'm allowed to like all the ones I got, eh?

I pulled these off of a 74 and a 75. Both were mikado. and all were metal. Could've been an upgrade but on the 74 I think the only thing added to it was plenty of rust.

Maybe I am misunderstanding... Are those possibly on other years or are those personal preferences that you know for sure has them? Maybe a parts book says I'm out to lunch... I don't know...I'm so cornfused :D

75 still has drum front brakes. 76 went to disc.

There is a sticky thread in stock truck forum that covers all the year model changes and features

i'm kinda partial to the '80 since i have one, but anything '80 and older is cool. i prefer the two headlight setup, but love the look of the older trucks valance minus bumper. so like all other things, it's a personal preference i suppose.

What I meant was that 77 and older have the good trim molding. Newer trucks have that plastic covered tinfoil crap that is always thrashed.
