Post subject: How do I stop dieseling?
PostPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2005 6:06 pm
I just bought a '76 (gasoline engine) with an automatic. Just about every time that I turn the truck off it diesels for a few seconds and makes all of those fun sputtering and grinding noises. The only advice that I have gotten is to leave it in gear when I turn the ignition off to give some resistance against the engine. I have a feeling that if I keep doing that, I will be back here in a few months asking about a new tranny. Any advice?

give it a tune up fer sure.

welcome by the way.....

there's other reasons that can cause this...... try running better gas .....if you have a stock engine and carb there's the idle stop solinoid. see if the spring and needle are missing , if it's running rough too i'd make sure the timing chain didn't slip a tooth.

if you plan on keeping this truck you'll be learning alot about keeping one running. a lot of mechanics won't touch em'....

the search funtion is your friend, if something is going to go wrong it's happened to somebody here before...

this has happened to me before with my weber, not to sure what my dad did but he made its stop with some tuning of the carb, if you tune it and it still does it i would try to find and anti-dieseling solenoid, if ya cant find one i got one i would sell to you, its for a weber so it may not fit if you still got the stock carb

I forget exactly which of the electric doodads it is on the carb, but you can check out the solenoid for power as well. It should get juice while the motor is running, and none when it is off. The choke works the same way.

Autos had a couple things different, like no coasting richer solenoid on the carb. If the carb is original, you probably only have the anti-diesel solenoid on it.

You can also back the idle down a bit and see if that helps. If it is too fast it will make the problem worse. It would not hurt to adjust the idle mixture as well and make sure it is dialed in.

Whatever the exact cause, you are getting too much gas after it is shut off, and it is managing to ignite itself. Cut off the excess fuel flowing in after shut down is one way to solve it. Raising the octane of the gas is another (makes it less apt to self ignite)

Also try running a really good carb and injector cleaner in the gas tank.... Alot of times the dieseling is caused by carbon buildup that has been superheated.
