today I went to walts muffler to have a new flowmaster exhaust system installed in the LUV of my life. The installer said the flow master had a high drone noise and that I would be tired of it in no time. He said i would be better off with a magnaflow. He said it had a better sound I guess what I am looking for is something like the sound I used to get in the 60's. Maybe its not possible with the 1.8 engine that i have in the luv

Personally I would go with the flowmaster

i think that the flow masters have a nice howl to them. they are kind of loud and will give you the fealing of being ontop of the world. only problem 40-60 bucks for 1. the magna flow have the same effect kind of but more contained you will be happy with both because they are both a high priced muffler. btw the magnaflows are around 30 bucks. the key is you want some back preasure if your going to do a complete system so come off at like a 1 3/4 and come out at what ever you want with these mufflers and that combo of pipe you'll kick the hourses about 20hp. i would go with the flow master though because they have a very nice sound and will make your truck sound a little tougher.

I got a pacesetter header from the guy on ebay(with the ceramic coating option-it is chrome like and beautiful!),who by the way ships promptly. Then talked with A-1 mufflers in Everett about the same question. What we came up with was (since I wanted a mostly quiet sound-if possible) was to use a stock GM V8 single inlet/dual outlet muffler and he fabbed and superbly installed a custom working dual tail pipe system. Yeah, I get some of those "now just what is going on with that?" looks. It only makes a hairy chested noise when hard into the power band. As the system "seasons" it is mellowing out and is nice and quit with no drone at cruising speeds. Now if I can only figure out why the headlights fuse keeps blowing out.

i have a pace setter header and a full 2" mandrel bent exsaust on my truck whith a flow master 40 in it. It sounds kinda ricey. I honestly dont know how you would get a meaty tone, maybe using a resignator after the muffler? :?

Modifying the "Ricey" sound: I was looking to take some of the "edge" off my new exhaust system too and after talking to some of my motorhead buddies, came up with the following twist on the old flip the lid on the stock aircleaner housing: I got a filter of the same diameter but about a 1/2 inch taller and installed it. There was plenty of hood clearance and the exhaust note was somewhat lowered and mellowed out. Something about more air going in to the engine, the lower or more modulated the exhaust note. Anyway, a cheap experiment to try to see if it works for you.

The 2" off the header to the muffler may be too much diameter. Check out Dr. Luv's post. Mine is 1 3/4" off the header and 2 1/4" out of the muffler. Resonators may be the best and least expensive fix and provide some of the back pressure that engine requires. But since we all aren't made of money sometimes we just learn to live with our experiments! I wanted mine to be ghost-like, but making a wee bit if noise is fun too. Good luck.

I had a Magna-Flow with fatter pipe on my Chevy 1500. It sounded pretty good over the stock muffler. It rusted out after 5 years. I recently installed a FlowMaster and in my opinion, it sounds just a little bit throatier than the Magna-Flow. I hope it lasts more than 5 years. Hell, The mufflers on my LUV have held up for over 14 years!
