To adjust the clutch you just grab the cable and pull it forward then snug up the nut and tighten the jam nut right? I just did this becouse my clutchfork was rattling on my header. I think it was a little loose

Adjust it so you have about one half inch free pedal.

Not having any free pedal is fatal to a clutch, and the whole cable system is ass backward to mechanical linkage. You lose free pedal as it wears. I found out the hard way on my 86 Subaru. I lost the clutch prematurely.

since were on the topic of adjusting the clutch, in that pup that i got, when you change gears its like the inerds of the tranny are still turning when the clutch is down and it grinds when you change gears. no a bad grind, but not good though. is that just the clutch not disengaging all the way?

I am wondering if I have a similar problem with my '80 project truck. Once I get out of 1st gear and start giving her gas going up a hill, the motor revs higher, but the truck doesn't want to go unless I lay off some and baby the gas. Is this a clutch out of adjustment, a clutch on the way out, or transmission problems ? I was thinking it was transmission, but maybe it isn't. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

To quote our encyclopedia here, two things come to mind. First, if there is no free pedal, then maybe the throwout bearing is still pressing on the fingers of the pressure plate disengaging the clutch somewhat, thus allowing the clutch to slip. Bad news. Second, if the springs of the pressure plate are weak because of age, the clutch can also slip even though you have free pedal. Get your wallet out. Either one can cause some gear grinding.

either one probly will need a clutch replacement. I was running into my clutch slipping. By the time i got back to Spokane from Tacoma the clutch was GONE.

The reason you have to baby the gas is cause' that if you give the motor too much gas at first then it's getting too much fuel and your kinda "flooding" your engine till it gets at the right speed so that the motor can combust all the fuel in the chamber.

To answer Farmer_joes comment, yes, my truck does it too, but then again I also have 120K+ miles on my motor and tranny, and I kinda rush my shifting a bit too, and i've got my clutch touching the floor when I shift. I need to find a re-build kit or get a low-milage 2wd diesel trooper trans and bolt it to my motor and make a new trans mount (it it needs one)
