 Post subject: fuel pump relay?
PostPosted: Tue May 17, 2005 7:04 pm
so i went to drive to school this morning, and about 300 feet from my house, my 80 luv died. i am able to restart it, but only keep it running for about 10-15 seconds. headlights dont work, but the stereo and gauges do... odd. i checked all the fuses and theyre fine, not the battery because i tried jumping it, i have a alternator and voltage regulator less than 2 months old... and ideas? i suspect the fuel pump relay, as the engine suddenly cuts out about 10 seconds after it starts. any ideas, (especially 800xl? haha)

It does sound like the pump isn't running when the motor is spinning. The startup bypass is working though, so you get fuel while the motor is cranking, enough to run 10 seconds on.

First thought that jumped into my head was the fusible link. On the Positive battery terminal there is the big fat wire to the started and then another smaller connection. The first few inches of that has a couple of wires that are designed to blow out before the rest of the wiring harness goes up in smoke. Not good if it went, but it could have just been hanging by a thread already or there is a loose connection. Check for 12v on the bigger wire on the alternator. If it aint there, start at the battery and work along that wire and see if you find a bad connection.

Headlights should not be affected by the pump relay, so if anything else is wrong I'd probably guess the regulator. Do you get an ALT light on the dash with the key on, and does it go away when you start the truck?
